3.22 & 3.23 Through the Looking Glass

[At the Others’ camp, we see Ben sitting in his tent writing in his journal.]

_/12 An important meeting tonight with (R) and (M) regarding the developing situation. We are now on day 3 of our exodus from the village and I am, I fear, at the limit of my tactical resources. (T)’s agenda, which I don’t question, is however a narrow and difficult one, and I could well wish we’d had time to prepare, not merely for the military strike, but for a surveillance campaign of the beach. We are short on provisions (seasonal) and, more importantly, the long-awaited re-supply of camp gear having been missed (and so necessary!) _____ _____ _____ just as our water supply ____ ___ have been cut off. [A walkie transmission interrupts Ben as he writes.]
BONNIE: Come in. Come in, Ben.
BEN: Hello?
BONNIE: Ben, it's Bonnie. Ben, are you there? Can you hear me, Ben?
[Mikhail and Richard are playing chess, and notice Ben on his walkie outside for signal]
BEN: Why are you breaking radio silence?
BONNIE: One of them's down here.
BEN: I'm sorry, what?!
BONNIE: We have him tied up but he's here. One of them swam down here.
BEN: Who? Which one?
BONNIE: He won't tell us.
CHARLIE: [Overhearing] It's Charlie! Tell him I said hi!
BEN: How did... how does he know about the station?
BONNIE: He said Juliet told them.
[Pause]
BEN: All right, sit tight, don't do anything, I'm sending help. [To Mikhail] Mikhail you need to go down to The Looking Glass and find out what Charlie Pace is doing down there.
MIKHAIL: You told us The Looking Glass was inoperable. Flooded.
BEN: I lied. Mikhail, I need you to go, now.
MIKHAIL: I can be there by dawn. But if Juliet told them about The Looking Glass, what else did she tell them?
[Mikhail goes, as Ben fiddles with his walkie]
BEN: Ryan, come in. Ryan are you there?
[At the beach, Ryan's walkie is off as he looks at the quiet camp with binoculars]

[Later]
[Ben uses his walkie at the Others' camp]
BEN: What?
TOM: They're all dead. Diane, Ivan, all of em, dead. And Shephard and his people, they're all gone.
BEN: Gone, gone where?
TOM: I dunno. Did you hear me? They killed seven of our...
RYAN: Tom! Calm down and tell him the good news.
BEN: What good news?
TOM: We caught three of em. The one's who stayed behind to blow up the tents. Ben, they knew we were coming?
BEN: It was Juliet. She betrayed us.
TOM: What?
BEN: Just figure out where she is, Tom.
RYAN: [To Sayid] Get up.
[He pulls him up]
RYAN: OK, junior, where the hell did...
[Sayid spits in his face, and Ryan hits him hard over the head with his handgun]
TOM: They're not talking.
BEN: Who do you have?
TOM: Jarrah, Kwon, and the dentist.
BEN: Shoot Kwon.
TOM: What?
BEN: If you want them to answer questions, kill Kwon, do it now.
JIN: [Speaks Korean at Tom]
RYAN: I dunno what that means, but I'm sure its lovely.
[He cocks his gun]
BERNARD: No, wait. No.
JIN: No. No talk.
BERNARD: No please.
TOM: You talk to me, nobody will get hurt. Now tell me where your people are.
SAYID: He's lying, he's going to kill us all any...
[Sayid is kicked down]
RYAN: Where are they?
[Short pause. Ryan puts his gun at Jin]
RYAN: Sayonara.
BERNARD: A radio tower. They're hiking to a radio tower.
TOM: Why in the hell are they going there?
BERNARD: A woman, parachuted here. She has a satellite phone and they're gonna call her ship.
BEN: [On walkie] Juliet thought we were coming tomorrow. So why were they waiting for us tonight?
RYAN: [To Bernard] You heard him. How'd you know?
BERNARD: A kid, told us, he came in a canoe, and he warned us.
TOM: What kid?
BERNARD: Karl. He said his name was Karl.
TOM: You heard that, Ben? [Pause] Ben?!
BEN: I heard.
[Ben looks out of his tent and stares at Alex]
TOM: What d'you want us to do, kill em?
BEN: No. Not yet.


[Next day at the Others' camp. Ben draws a line to the radio tower on a map, as Richard watches.]
RICHARD: We're going to the radio tower?
BEN: Not we, Richard, me. You're going to take everyone to the temple as planned.
RICHARD: Now might not be the best time to go tromping off on your own.
BEN: Oh really and why not?
RICHARD: Because people are asking questions, Ben. About leaving home, about what happened to Locke, about Jacob. Not to mention the rapidly spreading rumour that everyone that went down to the beach is dead.
BEN: They're not all dead.
[Ben gets up to get some things]

ALEX: Where are you going?
BEN: Hello, Alex.
ALEX: I asked where you were going.
BEN: Well I thought I might go for a walk! See if I can't find Jack and all his friends.
ALEX: [Defiantly] I'm coming with you.
BEN: All right.
ALEX: [Surprised] What?
BEN: I said all right. In fact I think its a good idea. I mean you do want to see Karl again, don't you? [Pause] Get your pack, I'm leaving in ten minutes.
RICHARD: There's forty of them. And you're alone. They're gonna do whatever it takes to get off the Island. What do you think's gonna happen when you get there?
BEN: I'm gonna talk them out of it.

[Later]

[A bleeping sound can be heard from the comms room]
GRETTA: That's Ben.
MIKHAIL: [Holds up his knife] I'll get it.
[In the jungle, Ben talks to Mikhail on his walkie as he and Alex walk]
BEN: You have to understand, everything I did, I did for the Island.
MIKHAIL: The Island told you it was necessary for you to jam your own people?
BEN: Yes it did. You've always been a loyalist, Mikhail, now I'm asking you to trust me, to trust Jacob who told me to do this.
MIKHAIL: Why would Jacob ask you to lie to your own people?
BEN: Because this Island is under assault by forces stronger than anything its had to deal with in many many years. And we are meant to protect it, Mikhail, by any means necessary. The jamming was for everyone's security. We are in a serious situation here.
MIKHAIL: So why not trust me?
BEN: I made a mistake. I should have told you, and I apologise.
[Pause]
BEN: Mikhail, are you still there?
MIKHAIL: Yes.
BEN: I need you to help me. I need you to help me clean up this mess I've made. I need you to kill Charlie. Make sure that the jamming mechanism continues to function at all costs. And we can't risk Greta and Bonnie telling the others about what we've done, so you'll have to take care of them too.
[Alex looks shocked]
MIKHAIL: How do I know you didn't say the same thing to them about me
BEN: Because if I had, Mikhail, you'd already be dead.

[Later]

[Ben and Alex have stopped while Ben studies his map]
BEN: If we head North, we should get to em before they reach the tower.
ALEX: Why did you let me come?
BEN: I let you come because I'm delivering you to your new family. I let you come because you betrayed me, Alex.
ALEX: You locked Karl in a cage. You put him a room and tried to brainwash him.
BEN: I didn't want him to get you pregnant. I suppose I overreacted. We better get going.
ALEX: Ben. Why do you have to stop them? Why won't you just let them leave.
BEN: Because I can't, Alex.

[Later]

Ben and Alex appear before the Losties on a hillside.]
BEN: Hello, Jack. We need to talk.

[Inside The Looking Glass, Mikhail exits the comms room]
GRETA: What did Ben say?
BONNIE: Can we kill him?
MIKHAIL: Is it possible to turn this equipment off?
BONNIE: What?
MIKHAIL: The equipment that's jamming the Island, can you turn it off?
GRETA: Sure. Ben gave us the code.
MIKHAIL: You are the only ones who have it?
BONNIE: Yeah. Why?
MIKHAIL: What would happen if this station were to be flooded?
GRETA: Nothing. The casing for the equipment is waterproof, it'll keep going forever.
MIKHAIL: Then why do you need to be here?
BONNIE: Because Ben told us to. We were following orders.
MIKHAIL: And you never asked why?
BONNIE: No. Because I trust him. And I trust Jacob. And the minute I start questioning orders, this whole thing, everything that we're doing here falls apart.

[Later]

[Jack and Ben stand opposite each other on the hillside. Kate heads off to check the flank, as Jack approaches Ben.]
BEN: [To Naomi] Hi, I'm Benjamin, I don't believe we've had the pleasure...
JACK: Don't talk to him! [To Ben] What do you want?
BEN: Just a moment of your time. To talk, you and me, alone.
JACK: For what?
BEN: Jack you've just killed seven of my people, the least you can give me is five minutes.
[Rose and Sun exchange anxious looks. Kate arrives back to Jack]
JACK: He alone?
KATE: There's only two sets of tracks, his and hers.
JACK: Five minutes.
[Ben nods. As he leads the wway, Jack grabs Ben's walkie]


[Jack follows Ben away from the main group]
BEN: Have a seat.
[They both sit.]
BEN: Not so long ago, Jack. I made a decision, that took the lives of over forty people in a single day. I'm telling you this because, history is about to repeat itself, right here, right now.
JACK: Let me guess, you've got us surrounded, and if I don't do what you say you're gonna, you're gonna kill all my people.
BEN: No Jack, you are.
[Jack laughs]
JACK: And how am I going to do that, Ben?
BEN: The woman you're travelling with. The one who parachuted onto the Island from that helicopter. She's not who she says she is.
JACK: She's not, huh?
BEN: No she's not.
JACK: Then who is she?
BEN: She's a representative of some people who've been trying to find this Island, Jack. She's one of the bad guys.
JACK: Oh, I almost forgot, you're the, you're the good guys.
BEN: Jack, listen to me. If you phone her boat, every single living person on this Island will be killed. So here's what has to happen. Get that device, the phone she carries with her, and give it me. I will turn around, we'll go back to my people, you will turn around and go back to your people.
JACK: I'm not going anywhere.
[They both stand.]
BEN: May I have my walkie back?
JACK: What?
BEN: There's something you need to hear. Please.
[Jack gives it him]
BEN: Tom, are you there?
TOM: Yes, I'm here.
BEN: [To Jack] Your plan killed seven of my people, but the one's that you failed to kill are now holding your friends. Jin, Sayid, Bernard. At gunpoint.
SAYID: Jack don't give him anything!!!
[Sounds of a struggle can be heard over the walkie]
BERNARD: Leave him alone!!
RYAN: I said shut up!!
[A thud signals Ryan hitting someone]
JACK: And what's to stop me from snapping your neck?
BEN: [Quickly] Tom, unless you hear my voice in one minute, shoot all three of them.
TOM: Got it.
[Ben looks at his watch]
RYAN: I said don't move!!
BEN: Bring me the phone, Jack.
SAYID: Don't negotiate with him...
JIN: No!
BEN: Forty seconds.
JACK: No. I'm getting them all off the Island. All of them!!
BEN: Let me ask you something, Jack. Why do you wanna leave the Island? What is it that you so desperately want to get back to? You have no-one. Your father's dead, your wife left you, moved on with another man. Can you just not wait to get back to the hospital? Get back to fixing things? It's twenty seconds now. Just get me the phone, Jack.
JACK: No.
BEN: Ten seconds. Bring me the phone.
JACK: No.
BEN: I'm not bluffing!
JACK: I WON'T DO IT!!!
BEN: Five. Four. Three...
JACK: No.
[Pause]
[Three shots sound over the mike]
BEN: I'm so sorry, Jack.

[Jack attacks Ben, pounding him relentlessly and causing his own knuckles to bleed. Jack grabs the walkie.]

[Later]

[Jack drags a bloody Ben back to the main group, and throws him on the ground.]
JACK: Tie him up. He's coming with us.
[Jack walks on and Kate chases after him. Alex approaches Ben, and Danielle approaches Alex]
ALEX: What?
BEN: [Sighs] Alex. This is your mother.
[They stare at each other, Rousseau holding back tears]
ROUSSEAU: I'll help you tie him up.

[Later]

[The group trek up a hill to see the radio tower dominating the sky. Inside the French message can be heard playing on loop. The recording is from a machine in the room by a speaker]
ROUSSEAU: I recorded this sixteen years ago. [To Alex] Three days before you were born. I guess we don't need it anymore.
[She turns off the recording and removes the tape]
JACK: [To Naomi] All right, do it.
[Naomi holds the phone]
NAOMI: I can't get a signal in here.
[They all exit the room and go outside, as everyone watches, including Ben who has been tied to a tree]
NAOMI: I'm getting something!
KATE: It's gonna work! It's happening, we're gonna get off of this Island!
JACK: We'll celebrate when we're home.
BEN: Jack! I know you think you're saying your people. But you need to stop this. It's a mistake. JACK: The mistake was listening to you.
BEN: This'll be your last chance, Jack. I'm telling you, making that call is the beginning of the end.
NAOMI: I've got it, I've got a signal!!!
BEN: Jack please, you don't know what you're doing!!


JACK: I know exactly what I'm doing.
[Naomi presses on the phone, and it says “CONNECTED”. Naomi suddenly shakes, and spurts blood from her mouth. She falls down with a knife in her back and drops the phone. Behind her, Locke moves forward]
JACK: JOHN!!!
[Locke pulls out the gun he found, and points it at Jack]
LOCKE: Step back, Jack.
JACK: What did you do?
LOCKE: What I had to. Now step back.
[Jack stays still as the phone tone signals that Naomi has made the call, and there just needs someone to answer it]
LOCKE: Stay away from the phone.
[Jack dives for it. Locke tries to destroy it, but his shot misses and Jack takes it]
JACK: What are you doing, John?
LOCKE: I don't wanna shoot you.
BEN: Do it, John! Shoot him! Do what you need to do...
[Rousseau knocks him unconscious with an elbow strike to the face. The phone continues to beep waiting for someone to pick up.]

3.21 Greatest Hits

[At the Other’s campsite, Alex butchers a white rabbit and her hands are covered in blood. An angry Ben comes storming in from the jungle using his cane to keep his balance.]

Alex: Hey.

[Ben storms past Alex.]

Alex: When did you get back?

Ben: [turning to face Alex] Just now.

Alex: Where’s Locke?

[Ben does a gunslingerish toss and flip thingy with the gun as he pulls it from his belt. He holds it out to Alex.]


Ben: [seething with barely controlled rage] Here’s your gun back.

[Hesitantly, Alex reaches for the gun.]

Richard [approaching] Ben, what’s going on?

Ben: Where’s Ryan?

Richard: He’s in his tent. Are you – are you alone? Or---

Ben. It’s time to get them.

Richard: [Hesitantly] But you said tomorrow.

Ben: Jacob wants it to happen now.

Richard: [In a low voice] What happened out there? Did John see---

Ben: John had an accident.

Ben: Ryan!?

[Ryan Price has been playing chess. He snaps to.] Yes sir!



Ben: If you leave right now, how long will it take you to reach their camp?

Ryan Price: If I take my ten best, we can set up to hit ‘em by nightfall.

Ben: Then you better get going.

Richard: But…no...wait….Ben…Moving up the schedule…Juliet might not be ready. What if she hasn’t had time to indentify---



Ben: Then we’ll take all their women and we’ll sort out the ones we need later.

Ryan Price: And the men?

Ben: If any of them are stupid enough to get in the way, kill them.

Ryan Price: All right.

[Overhearing this exchange, Alex takes off running into the jungle.]

3.20 The Man Behind the Curtain

Ben is born two months prematurely in a forest outside Portland. Just before his mother dies in his father's arms, she asks that her son be named Benjamin.

[On the Island, Ben looks at a doll in his tent. As Ben sits, Richard enters]
RICHARD: What you got there?
BEN: Its a birthday present. Mine just happens to be today. You do remember brithdays, don't you Richard?
RICHARD: So do you want me to bring the er tape back to Juliet?
BEN: [Puts down the doll] What?
RICHARD: The tape with your instructions for Juliet, do you want me to bring it back to the medical station?
BEN: [Slightly irate] I recorded it yesterday, before we left, I thought you already took it!
RICHARD: No.
[Ben gets up quickly and heads out of the tent]
BEN: Where's Tom? Tom! Have you seen my recorder?
[Tom's gaze is fixed farther away, and Ben looks to see what it is he's staring at. He sees Locke, carrying a body on his back approach him]
LOCKE: You said that if I killed my father, you'd tell me everything I wanted to know about the Island.
[He dumps the body-bag at Ben's feet]
LOCKE: So why don't you start at the beginning.

[Inside Ben's tent, Locke and Ben discuss matters over a glass of scotch/whisky]
BEN: I know I promised to tell you everything, John, and I wish it was as simple as me taking out a dusty old book and opening it up.
[He offers Locke a glass, but is met with a blank face. He places the glass next to him instead]
BEN: But its not that simple.
LOCKE: How about you just tell me.
BEN: You probably think I'm the leader of this little community. But that's not entirely true. We all answer to someone, John.
LOCKE: And whom might that be?
BEN: His name is Jacob.
LOCKE: OK then. Take me to Jacob.
BEN: I can't do that.
[John gets up and heads to leave]
BEN: Where are you going?
LOCKE: Hell Ben, if you don't wanna take me maybe someone else will. I'll just go and ask Richard...
BEN: Why would Richard take you? He doesn't know where Jacob is, he doesn't talk to Jacob...
LOCKE: Well who talks to him?
BEN: I do.
LOCKE: So you're the only one who talks to him!
BEN: That's right.
LOCKE: And no-one else knows where he is?
BEN: I was born here on this Island, I'm one of the last that was. Most of these people you see, I brought them here, so Jacob talks to me, John. He tells me what to do, trusts me.
LOCKE: And, no-one else has ever seen him?
BEN: That's right.
LOCKE: How convenient. You know what I think, Ben? I think there is no Jacob. I think your people are idiots if they believe you take orders from someone else. You are the man behind the curtain, the Wizard of Oz. And you're a liar.
BEN: And what might you base that theory on, John?
LOCKE: Because if you were telling the truth, your hand wouldn't be shaking.
[Ben puts his other hand over the one holding the glass, which is shaking]




[FLASHBACK]
[A young Ben walks down a jetty from the submarine with his father and a number of other people. Roger looks at an array of DHARMA boxes, vans, a boat, while Ben sees a sign saying “Namaste! The Dharma Initiative”]
WOMAN: Namaste!
[She puts a floral necklace over Roger]
ROGER: Thanks.
WOMAN: Namaste!
[She puts another necklace over Ben]
[A man greets Roger. Its the same man who stopped his car when Ben was a baby]
MALE DRIVER: Hey, welcome to the Island man! Namaste.
ROGER: Namaste, yeah.
MALE DRIVER: So, what do ya think?
ROGER: Wow this is, some place. Thanks again for the opportunity Mr. Goodspeed.
MR. GOODSPEED: Horace! Please.
ROGER: Horace.
HORACE: And this must be Ben.
ROGER: Yeah. [To Ben] Mr. Goodspeed was there the day you were born.
HORACE: Yes I was.
ROGER: He's doing us a big favour here. Gave your old man a job. [To Horace] Ah he don't say much.
HORACE: That's OK. I bet he will when he has something to say, right Ben? Hey, you hungry kiddo? Huh, huh? Great. Well I'll tell you what, after you're done processing, we'll have some lunch, how's that sound?
ROGER: Yeah thank you.
HORACE: You're gonna love it here.

[Inside a room, a group of people are being inducted. A television shows a video of Marvin Candle]

MARVIN: Welcome to the Island. For your own comfort and safety, we ask that you stay within the confines of your new living quarters. Our Barracks are surrounded by a high frequency sonar fence, to protect us from the Island's abundant and diverse wildlife. You are now a member of the DHARMA Initiative...
ROGER: [To other viewers] What kind of wildlife you think this fence is protecting us from?
MAN: Roger Linus? Roger Linus!
ROGER: Yeah.
[Roger heads to register as the video continues]
MARVIN: Every morning you will be given a new code which will allow you to cross outside the fence... there are properties on this Island that exist nowhere else on Earth. Our mission, is to study these properties for the betterment of mankind and advancement of world peace. Most of you will be working on the main (inaudible), should you be assigned... (inaudible)
[Ben looks around at staff giving injections to some individuals. A young girl approaches him]
GIRL: Hey. You're new huh.
[Ben nods]
GIRL: I'm Annie. Want one?
[She shows him an Apollo bar. Ben takes it]
ANNIE: You can have as many as you want.
[Ben then overhears Roger talking to a female member of staff. Her shirt reveals her name as “Opal”]
ROGER: Work man? What is this? Work man? I'm a janitor!
OPAL: I'm sorry Mr. Linus.
ROGER: Goodspeed told me you people were doing experiments, changing the world. I didn't come here to clean up after ya!
OPAL: Look if anything else opens up, you can feel free to apply for it.
[Roger walks away in a huff]
ROGER: [To Ben] Come on.



[Out in the jungle, a man runs. Mikhail sprints into the Others camp]
MIKHAIL: Where is Ben!!! Where is he!!!
[Ben steps out of his tent]
BEN: I thought you were dead.
MIKHAIL: I'm fortunate the pylons were not set to a lethal level.
[Locke exits the tent too]
MIKHAIL: What is he doing here?
BEN: Its all right.
MIKHAIL: He's the one who tried to kill me!
BEN: He's with us now. Where have you been Mikhail?
MIKHAIL: I encountered several of his people in the jungle. They had an injured woman with them. Apparently she had just parachuted onto the Island.
BEN: What!
MIKHAIL: Her helo crashed into water. She says her ship is approximately 130 clicks to the West of us. She has a radio telephone.
BEN: Where is she now?
MIKHAIL: I assume they have taken her back to their camp.
BEN: We'll be visiting their camp day after tomorrow, we'll take care of it then.
MIKHAIL: Day after tomorrow? We have to go now.
LOCKE: Ben's not going anywhere with you.
MIKHAIL: Excuse me?
LOCKE: He and I are going to see Jacob.
[The rest of the Others begin to murmur the name. Tom and Richard look on with shocked faces]
MIKHAIL: Please ell me this isn't true Benjamin.
BEN: [Pauses] I'm sorry I have to deal with this now, John, our excursion will have to wait.
MIKHAIL: Since when do you explain yourself to him? An outsider...
[Locke punches Mikhail to the ground and proceeds to violently beat him]
BEN: Tom! Richard!!!
[Locke seizes his attack, leaving Mikhail bleeding]
LOCKE: [To Ben] So when do we leave?
[Later, Ben and Locke collect water from a stream]
BEN: You know you didn't have to beat Mikhail senseless to make your point, John.
LOCKE: Yes I did.
ALEX: Locke.
[Both Ben and Locke turn to see Alex]



ALEX: I hear you're gonna go see Jacob. You're gonna need this.
[She holds out a gun for Locke. Ben looks on with a look of surprise]
LOCKE: [Taking the gun] Thanks.
[Alex turns to leave, but then looks back at Ben]
ALEX: [Coldly] Happy birthday, Dad.
[She leaves]
[FLASHBACK]
[Ben sits in class while a teacher discusses volcanoes. Her shirt reveals her name to be “Olivia”]
OLIVIA: So once water is added to the bicarbonate, we will get our very own volcanic reaction.
[Annie raises her hand]
OLIVIA: Yes.
ANNIE: Is that what happened to the volcano on this Island?
OLIVIA: Exactly Annie, but that was a long time ago. OK, lets get ourselves an eruption.
[The kids murmur with excitement. Olivia pours the water into the model volcano and the volcano overflows with fizzy liquid]
OLIVIA: Just add water and, voilà. Now I know its not lava but....
[The ground begins to shake. As the kids murmur, a siren sounds]
OLIVIA: OK everyone into your positions. That's right, all together. Annie, lock the backdoor please!
[Olivia loads a shotgun as Annie padlocks the door]
OLIVIA: [Sees Ben hasn't moved] Ben. Come on, honey, you gotta move. Ben!
[Outside a number of DHARMA staff are running past with guns. Annie grabs Ben]
ANNIE: Come on.
[They sit in the corner with the others]
ANNIE: Don't worry its just the Hostiles. We'll be OK.
[The DHARMA staff shout and a loud explosion can be heard]
[At night, Horace talks with Roger in his house at the Barracks. Ben listens from the next room]
HORACE: Hey man I heard you ran into a little trouble.
ROGER: We're driving back from the Flame and we hear this huge explosion. Next thing I know, there's a siren wailing, and we're driving to the middle of a shoot-out.
HORACE: Look we're having some skirmishes with the natives.
ROGER: What do you mean, natives?
HORACE: Well, we're not exactly sure who they are.
ROGER: [Throws down a beer can] Oh this ain't what I signed up for!
HORACE: Roger, I did you a favour man. You were having trouble finding work and don't forget about Ben, he's getting a quality education.
ROGER: I don't give a damn about his education. If I'm gonna get shot at I want hazard pay. I want another thirty grand.
HORACE: Calm down man.
ROGER: And don't try to tell me you don't have it, you hear me.
[Ben hears rattling at his window]
ROGER: All right get the hell out of my house.
[Ben closes his door fully and turns. Staring at him outside the window is his mother. Ben falls back, knocking over a chair. He gets up as Roger enters]
ROGER: I thought I told you to go to bed.
[He leaves. Ben looks again but his mother is no longer there. He looks at an old photograph of her in his room and cries]
[Out in the jungle, Ben loads his canteen into his pack as they prepare to head out]
BEN: Something you should know, John, before we go. Whether or not you think he's the Wizard of Oz, I can assure you that Jacob is very very real. And we're gonna go see him, and he's not gonna like it. In fact I have a feeling he's going to be very angry. And that's why my hand was shaking because this is not a man you go and see. This is a man who summons you.
LOCKE: Well I guess there's a first time for everything.
[They leave the camp, Locke looking at a bruised Mikhail as they go]



[FLASHBACK]
[Ben sits on the swings at the Barracks with Annie. He unwraps a present to find two carved wooden dolls, one boy and one girl]
ANNIE: It's us. That's you and that's me. Now we never have to be away from each other. Happy birthday, Ben.
BEN: Thanks.
ANNIE: You're welcome.



[At night, Ben arrives back at the house to find Roger asleep on the couch with beer cans scattered around the room. Ben puts a blanket over him and Roger rouses]
ROGER: [Sees the wrapped present] It's your birthday. Sorry I forgot. Kinda hard to celebrate on the day you killed your Mom. She was just seven months pregnant, we went for a hike, but you had to come early. Now, she's gone, and I'm stuck here on this Island, with you. [Pauses] Happy birthday, Ben.
[Ben rounds out crying. He goes straight to the sonar fence, hearing whispers. His mother then appears in front of him, on the other side of the barrier.
BEN: Mom?
[Ben runs toward the barrier]
EMILY: Ben, don't!
BEN: Mom!
EMILY: It's not time yet, Benjamin.
[She leaves]
BEN: Mom!!!
[In real-time, Locke and Ben trek through the jungle at night. They approach a line of what appears to be grey powder. Ben pauses and then steps over it. Locke looks at it and sniffs it]
BEN: Let's go, John. John!
[Locke follows]
[FLASHBACK]
[Ben heads to the sonar fence armed with the deactivation code. He enters it, turns the dial, and the sound of the fence buzzing dies down. He pulls out a white rabbit, and shoos it across the fence line to ensure it really is off, then runs through, collecting the rabbit as he goes. He heads into the jungle, hearing whispers]
BEN: Mom? Mom? Mom! MOM!!! Mom!!
[Ben hears the whispers, and then turns to see a younger Richard Alpert standing right by him]



RICHARD: Wo wo wo wo. Wo. Wo, hey hey, wo I didn't mean to scare you, wait. Wait, are you lost, wait.
BEN: Are you one of them?
RICHARD: One of whom?
BEN: A hostile.
RICHARD: Do you even know what that word means? What's your name?
BEN: Ben.
RICHARD: Ben. So you wanna tell me what you're doing in the middle of the jungle all by yourself.
BEN: I left home, and, I'm looking for my Mom.
RICHARD: You think she's out here?
BEN: You wouldn't believe me.
RICHARD: Try me.
BEN: She's dead.
RICHARD: Did she die here, on the Island?
BEN: No. When I was a baby.
RICHARD: Did you see her Ben, out here, in the jungle?
BEN: She talked to me.
RICHARD: What did she say?
BEN: That I couldn't come with her, she said it wasn't time yet.
RICHARD: You should go home now, your people will be looking for you.
BEN: I don't want to go back there! I hate it there. Take me with you.
RICHARD: Maybe that can happen. Maybe. But if that's what you really want Ben if that's what you want, I want you to really think about that. And you're gonna have to be very, very patient.



[In real-time, Ben and Locke approach an old shack in the jungle at night]
BEN: We're here.
[Locke shines his flash-light at Ben]
BEN: You'll wanna turn off your flash-light, John.
LOCKE: Why?
BEN: Jacob feels the same way about technology as you do.
[Locke turns the light off and they leave their bags outside. Ben reaches the door and lights a lantern]
BEN: Once I open this door, there's no turning back. You sure this is what you want?
[Locke stares at him]
BEN: So be it. [To the door] Jacob! I'm here with John Locke, we're coming in now.
[Inside Locke looks around the room. Jars stand by the window, a painting of a dog can be seen by the wall. Ben moves over to an empty chair]
BEN: Jacob. This is John. Aren't you going to say hello, John?
LOCKE: What?
BEN: [Looks to the chair] I told you he wouldn't.
LOCKE: Who, what are you talking about?
BEN: You can't see him?
LOCKE: See who?
BEN: Jacob. He's sitting right here. In this chair. [Looks at the chair] Yes I know but he insisted.
LOCKE: What is this?
BEN: You wanted the secrets of the Island, well here they are. This is the man who can answer every single.... [Looks at the chair] I am not. He made me bring him here, do you think that that was my... Sorry, may I finish?
LOCKE: You're crazy.
BEN: Excuse me.
LOCKE: You don't know anything about the Island do ya, you just, made it all up.
BEN: [Looks at the chair] Jacob please I can't hear him... if you're gonna talk over... sentences...
LOCKE: Stop. Stop. Shut up!!! You putting on a show for me? Or do you, do you really think there's someone there?
BEN: I know there's someone there.
LOCKE: You don't know anything.
BEN: I'm sorry you feel that way, John. And I'm sorry that you're too limited to see.
LOCKE: You're pathetic.
[As Locke leaves he hears a voice]
VOICE: Help... me.
[Locke turns]
LOCKE: What did you just say?
BEN: I, I didn't say anything.
LOCKE: Oh yes you did, I heard you, [raises the flash-light], you said...
[Suddenly the room takes on a life of its own. Chairs rock, glass smashes, the lantern catches fire and windows shatter]



BEN: [To the chair] That's enough, you've had your fun!
[Ben is thrust back against the wall. For a split moment there is a figure in the chair and a close-up of an eye. Locke runs out of the house. Ben follows. Pause]
LOCKE: What was that?
BEN: That was Jacob.
[The next day, Ben and Locke walk back through the jungle]
BEN: What did you hear in there, John? What did Jacob say to you?
LOCKE: He didn't say anything to me. You did.
BEN: What are you talking about?
LOCKE: There is no Jacob, Ben. I'm not gonna be taken in by the little show you put on last night. You're a fraud. And its time your people were told the truth. And this is not the way we came.
BEN: I'm taking us back another way. I wanted to show you something first.
LOCKE: I've seen enough.
BEN: You know, John, you're not wrong, some of the things I've told you, some of the things I've told everybody, are simply not true.
LOCKE: Like what?
BEN: Well, for starters, I wasn't born on this Island.
LOCKE: Then where did you come from?
BEN: That's what I wanna show you.
[FLASHBACK]
[A much older Ben is in his house, and zips up a DHARMA jumpsuit with “Ben – Work Man” stitched on. He looks at his watch, and then the doll Annie gave him years earlier, which he places in his bag. He heads outside carrying items to a DHARMA van. A now aged Roger is struggling to put pallets of beer into the back]
ROGER: Morning. OK, wait. Put it right, right down there. What's your problem now? Sure you're usually Chatty Cathy in the morning.
BEN: It's my birthday. I dunno why I keep fooling myself into thinking that one of these years you're actually gonna remember.
ROGER: Well I'll tell you what. All we gotta do this morning is run this stuff out to the Pearl station. Why don't we go up to the mesa, drink some beers. Have some, I dunno, father and son time.
BEN: I'd like that.
ROGER: OK.



[Roger drives the van up to the mesa]
ROGER: Well, you sure can't say it ain't beautiful.
[Roger drinks a beer]
BEN: Do you really blame me?
ROGER: What?
BEN: Do you really think its my fault that she died.
ROGER: What do I know.
[Ben looks at his watch]
ROGER: Why do you keep looking at your watch? You got a date? [Pauses] Listen. If it makes you feel any better, I will do my best to remember your birthday next year.
BEN: I don't think that's going to happen, Dad.
ROGER: What do you mean?
BEN: You know I've missed her too. Maybe as much as you have. But the difference is, for as long as I can remember, I've had to put up with you. And doing that required a tremendous amount of patience.
[Ben pulls out a gas mask]
BEN: Goodbye, Dad.
[Ben puts it on and then releases a gas canister]
ROGER: Ben?
[Roger struggles for breath as blood spurts from his nose and mouth]
[At the Barracks, Ben walks with gas mask on. He sees all the DHARMA employees lining the ground, all dead. He then notices Horace on a bench, and closes his eyes. Richard and the Hostiles arrive with masks on. Richard checks his watch, then removes his mask taking a deep breath. The rest of the team follow, as does Ben]
RICHARD: You want us to erm, go get his body?
BEN: No leave him out there.
[In real-time, Locke stands over a mass open grave full of skeletons, some still wearing their DHARMA jumpsuits]
BEN: This is where I came from, John. These are my people. The DHARMA Initiative. They came here seeking harmony, but they couldn't even coexist with the Island's original inhabitants. And when it became clear that one side had to go. One side had to be purged. I did what I had to do. I was one of the people that was smart enough to make sure that I didn't end up in that ditch, which makes me considerably smarter than you, John.
[John turns to strike but Ben shoots him. Locke falls into the ditch]
BEN: What did Jacob say to you?
LOCKE: Why did you do this?
BEN: Because you heard him. Now I need to know what he said.
LOCKE: Help me
BEN: John, I'm not going to ask you again. What did he say to you?
LOCKE: He said... help me.
[Ben looks troubled, and flinches for a moment]
BEN: Well I certainly hope he helps you, John.
[Ben leaves Locke lying in the ditch]

3.19 The Brig

[8 Days Ago: The scene flashes back to the moment Ben reveals Locke's Dad, Anthony Cooper, bound and gagged in the Other's jail. Ben, Richard, and Tom look on]

Locke: Dad? What is this?

Ben: You tell me. You brought him here.

Locke: I didn't bring him here.

Ben: I'd be careful about getting to close to him, John.

Locke: Where did you find him? Wha...Why did you bring him here?

Ben: I've already said we didn't.

Locke: You want me to ask him how he got here?

Ben: Be my guest.

[Locke walks over and removes Cooper's gag. Cooper instantly bites down hard on Locke: hand, drawing blood.]

Ben: Tom!

[Tom quickly steps forward and shocks Cooper in the neck with a tazer-like device which stops Cooper's biting of Locke. Locke backs out the doorway to stand with Ben and Richard just outside the room.]

Ben: I warned you, John.

Cooper: Don't you know, John? Don't you know where we are?

[Tom closes the door keeping himself and Cooper in the room and Ben, Richard, and Locke outside the room]

Locke: What did he mean?

Ben: I'm afraid we don't have time to deal with that right now, John. We're leaving first thing in the morning, all of us.

Locke: Where are you going?

Ben: We're going to a new place. Well, an old place actually. Would you like to come with us?

Locke: Yes.

Ben: Good. We're holding Kate a few buildings over from here. Maybe you'd like to say goodbye.



[3 Days ago. Locke walks over to Ben's tent. He is sitting and listening to the tape recording that Juliet made for him. Her voice can be heard on the tape “Ben, it's 6 A.M. on Saturday morning. Kwon is pregnant. The fetus is healthy and was conceived on island with her husband. He was sterile before they got here.” Ben shuts the tape player off as Locke walks in the tent]





Ben: Hello John. Thanks for coming.

Locke: [Pointing to the tape player] What's that?

Ben: Juliet is gathering information for us at your former camp. She's determining if any of the women are pregnant. Then we're gonna go in and...take them.

Locke: Take them?

Ben: This is not the first time we've done this, John. Trust me, no one will get hurt.. [Pointing to his cane] Could you pass me that please?

[Locke picks up and hands Ben his cane]

Ben: Thank you.

[Using the cane, Ben stands up which surprises Locke.]

Ben: I believe I have you to thank for this, John.

Locke: Me?

[Ben walks over and puts the tape player in a nightstand drawer.]

Ben: A week ago, I couldn't move my toes, but the minute you showed up, I started to feel pins and needles. And this is only the beginning, John. I can't wait to show you what this island can do. But unfortunately you're not ready, John.

Locke: Well...No, I'm ready.

Ben: No John, you're not. You're still crippled by the memories of the man you used to be before you came to this island. And you'll never be free until you release the hold that your father has over you. Why do you think you brought him here?

Locke: Oh, oh, oh, the magic box. Okay, Ben, how about you show me the magic...

Ben: [Interrupting] The magic box is a metaphor, John. I can't show you anything until you can show me that you're ready and willing to be one of us. When people join us here on this island, they need to make a gesture of free will...of commitment. That's why you're gonna have to kill your father.

[Locke glances outside of Ben's tent to an old stone column that Cooper is chained to.]

[Later It’s now night. Locke is asleep in the Others camp. Ben awakens him by tapping him with his cane.]

Ben: Wake up, John. It's time.

[Ben leads John to a pillar where Cooper is gagged and chained. The rest of the Others have gathered and watch expectantly. Ben hands John a large knife. Locke takes it.]

Ben: I know it won't be easy, but the quicker the better.

[Ben pulls Cooper's gag off.]

Cooper: You're kidding me, right? You expect him to kill me?

Ben: John, the hesitation that you're feeling is just the part of you that still feels like he has a perfectly good explanation for stealing your kidney...throwing you out of an 8 story window. Don't you want to be free from him?

Cooper: The hesitation he's feeling is because he is a spineless...

Locke: Shut up!

[Locke looks around and sees that all the Others in the camp have gathered and are watching the scene play out]

Locke: I gotta think...

Ben: Don't think, John.



Cooper: You’re wasting your time, bug eye. Me and him have been through all this. All he wants is his daddy...

Locke: Shut up! I said shut up!

Cooper: You really haven't figured it out yet have you?

Ben: Let go of him, John.

Locke: Why are you doing this to me?

Ben: You're doing this to yourself. As long as he's still breathing, you'll still be that same sad, pathetic little man that was kicked off his walkabout tour because you couldn't walk.

[Locke pushes the point of the knife under Cooper's chin. It starts to bleed, but he does not shove it all the way in. He then pulls it back.]

Cooper: I'll be here the rest of the week John if you change your mind.

[Ben raises his cane and strickes Cooper, knocking him out. He then takes the knife away from Locke]

Ben: [To the crowd] I'm sorry. He's not who we thought he was.

[Locke walks away through the crowd, embarrassed and dejected.]

[Later. It’s now yesterday. The scene flashes back to Locke waking up on the ground to the sound of the Others breaking camp. He gets up and finds Ben.]

Locke: Ben. What's going on?

Ben: We're moving.

Locke: Moving? Where are we going?

Ben: We are not moving anywhere, John. You are going to stay behind. You both are going to stay behind.

Locke: What? You're not taking him?

[Locke points to Cooper who still stands chained to a column in the distance.]

Ben: He's your mess, John. Why would we clean it up.

Locke: Ben, if you're trying to put me in my place or embarrass me...

Ben: Where would you get a ridiculous idea like that?

Locke: Well, you can't leave me. After everything you can't just...

Ben: Don't tell me what I can't do, John.

Locke: But I thought I was...special.

Ben: Well, everyone makes mistakes. We're leaving now. We'll leave a trail, one you can track. And John, unless you're carrying your fathers body on your back, don't bother.


[Ben walks away and joins the Others who are all leaving.]
