3.16 One of Us

[Juliet looks up and sees the ladder leading out the sub hatch. Sunlight and the sounds of birds chirping comes down the hatch opening. Juliet climbs up the ladder and onto the sub's deck. She stands and sees the island for the first time. The camera backs out and shows the small sub, the dock and the mountains of the island. Ben walks up the pier to the sub]

Ben: Hello Dr. Burke. My name is Benjamin Linus.

[Juliet is still standing on top of the sub. Ben reaches up to her and shakes her hand]

Ben: I'm really looking forward to working with you. Watch your step here.

[[Ben helps Juliet step off the sub onto the pier and they walk toward the island]

[Later]

[Flashback to Juliet in an operating room on the island. A few others are there as well. Everyone is wearing a blue smock with the DHARMA logo of The Flame station printed on them. An EKG with a long beep shows a flat line. With bloody latex gloves, Ethan pulls down his mask]

Ethan: She's gone, Juliet. She's dead.

[Goodwin is also in the room. Behind him can be seen a large round clock on the wall. The time reads 12:18]

Goodwin: [Speaking to Juliet] Hey, it's okay. You tried. Why don't you go ahead and take off. I'll talk to Ben.

[Juliet walks out of the room. Cut to shot of Juliet sitting on a rocky section of the beach looking out into the ocean. Ben walks up beside her. He is carrying a brown satchel on a strap over his shoulder]

Ben: It was Sabine's choice to get pregnant.

[Ben sits next to her]

Ben: She knew she was taking a risk.

Juliet: I think it happens at conception. And if that's the case there's nothing I can do about it. At least not here.

Ben: I'm not sure I understand.

Juliet: The only way to see if I'm right is to take a woman off the island, back to Miami...

Ben: You're not taking anybody off the island.

Juliet: In that case, there's nothing more I can do. I know you put a lot of faith in me, Ben. And I'm sorry I couldn't help you. My sister's giving birth...in 3 months...and I haven't even been able to call her. It's time for me to go home.

[Juliet gets up and starts to walk away]

Ben: Your sister won't be giving birth in 3 months, Juliet. She'll be dead before then. Her cancer is back.

[Juliet stops and looks at Ben. Ben opens the brown satchel and pulls out a document folder. Juliet looks inside at graphs of a cancer screening. She becomes distraught]
Juliet Where did you get this?

Ben: Mikhail. I'm sorry. I should have told you sooner. I just didn't see what good it would do...

Juliet: [Yelling] What good it would do?! I could have gone home! I could have been with her!

Ben: You still can. You can go home, Juliet. Be with her in her final days. Or you can stay here and help me with our problem.

Juliet: Why would I stay?

Ben: Because if you do, I will cure your sister's cancer.

Juliet: I'm supposed to take that on faith?

Ben: You've been here for 6 months. You've done extensive workups on all of us. Have you seen even a trace of cancer?

Juliet: That's here! And being that you won't let me bring my sister here I'm going to need more...

Ben: Jacob said he would take care of it himself. Unless, of course, you don't have faith in him.

[Juliet looks upset but wanting to believe]

Ben: Every woman on this island needs you. If you choose to stay...I promise you, we will save Rachel's life.

[Later]

[The scene shifts to Juliet walking out of her house and down the sidewalk while carrying the x-rays with her]

Man: Morning Juliet.

[The scene shifts to Ben sitting at his desk when he hears a knock on his door. He is reading the book Carrie. He walks and opens the door]

Ben: Hi.

Juliet: Can I come in?

Ben: Of course.

[Juliet enters and Ben close the door]

Ben: I was just finishing Carrie. Still don't know why you picked it, but boy is it depressing.

Juliet: You have a tumor.

Ben: [Stunned] What?

Juliet: When you told me about your back pain I said that I would take some x-rays to see if it was a small fracture or a herniated disk...but that's not your problem.

[Juliet takes out the x-ray and hands it to Ben]

Juliet: Your problem is a large tumor surrounding your L-4 vertebrae.

[Ben studies the x-ray and appears shocked]

Juliet: You're surprised.

Ben: Well, you just told me that I have cancer, Juliet, of course I'm surprised.

Juliet: No, I told you that you have a tumor.

[Ben walks to his kitchen and Juliet follows him]

Juliet: Why are you scared?

Ben: I'm not scared.

[Ben takes a glass from the cabinet and begins filling it with water from the sink faucet]

Juliet: Why are you scared, Ben? You said no one on this island ever had cancer. You told me that.

Ben: I know what I told you, Juliet.

Juliet: You told me you could fix it! You said that! You said that you cured my sister! You lied to me!

Ben: [Defensive] No I did not lie to you.

Juliet: If you can cure cancer, Ben, then why do you have it?

Ben: I don't know.

[Juliet slaps the glass of water out of Ben's hand, it falls to the floor breaking, and she points her finger in his face]

Juliet: I want to talk to her. I want to talk to Rachel! I want to talk to her, now!

Ben: It's not gonna happen, Juliet, but I can promise you that Rachel is fine.

Juliet: You never cured her!

Ben: I did!

Juliet: You're a liar!

Ben: No, Juliet!

Juliet: [Screaming] You lied to me!

Ben: I told you the truth! I gave you my word.

Juliet: [Crying] I don't...

[She breaks down and buries her face in Ben's chest. Ben seems shocked and doesn't know how to respond]

Juliet: [Crying] I want to go home. I want to go home, Ben. Please. Can't you please just let me go home?

Ben: No.

Juliet: [Anguished] Ohhhh.

[Ben walks away and Juliet falls on his kitchen counter crying

[Later]

The scene flashes back to Juliet playing a CD and listening to the song 'Downtown' by Petula Clark. Images are shown of her struggling to hold it together, setting up chairs in a circle, the book club meeting where an argument breaks out, the earth shaking which ends the meeting, and everyone heading outside to witness Flight 815 breaking apart in the sky]

Ben: Goodwin. Ethan. There may actually be survivors...and you're one of them. You're a passenger. You're in shock. Listen, learn, and don't get involved. I want lists in 3 days. Go.

[Ethan and Goodwin head out and Ben turns to Juliet who is holding a copy of the book Carrie]

Ben: So I guess I'm out of the book club.

[Juliet turns and starts to walk away]

Ben: Juliet? Juliet?

[Juliet turns and faces Ben]

Ben: I was looking for you this morning. You and I need to talk.

Juliet: Now?

Ben: We have some time. It's important. Take a walk with me.

[Ben and Juliet start walking and the scene shifts to them walking up to The Flame station at night]

Ben: [Speaking into a walkie-talkie] Mikhail, we're here.

[Static is heard]

Ben: He never has his walkie on.

Juliet: What are we doing here?

Ben: Something I need to show you.

[They approach The Flame station]

Ben: Mikhail! It's Ben! I'm here with Juliet! We're approaching the house! Don't shoot us...

Mikhail: [From inside the station] Well hurry up then.

[Inside The Flame station Mikhail leads Ben and Juliet to a wall of monitors]

Mikhail: Did you see it?

Ben: A plane fell out of the sky, Mikhail... of course we saw it. What do you have so far?

[Mikhail sits in front of 6 monitors which appear to display images of the plane and different news feeds of the event]

Mikhail: Oceanic Flight 815. Left Sydney, Australia, headed for Los Angeles, 324 people on board including the flight crew.

Ben: I want detailed files on every single passenger.

Mikhail: Already working on it.

Ben: Can we uplink to Richard in Acadia Park please.

[Mikhail adjusts a dial on the console]

Ben: [To Juliet] Yesterday, you called me a liar. I was hurt by that.

[Ben puts on a set of headphones and addresses the uplink]

Ben: Hello Richard, can you hear me?

[The screen focuses on a copy of the Miami Journal. Ben points to the screen]

Ben: Notice today's date. This is live. Okay Richard.

[The scene pans out to show a playground where a young boy slides down a slide and is caught by a woman. The woman turns and it is Rachel holding a young boy]

Juliet: Oh my God. Oh my God.

[Juliet steps forward, places her hands on the screen]

Juliet: [Crying] Oh. Oh my God.

[The scene on the screen shows Rachel and her child running and laughing on the playground]

Ben: A little over 2 years ago, to everyone's surprise, Rachel's cancer went into complete remission. Shortly after, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. His name is Julian. [To the uplink] Okay thank you, Richard. You'll wanna get back here as soon as you can. We may have some new visitors.

[The screen goes blank and Juliet reacts in anguish]

Juliet: [Crying] Oh God! No! No! No!

[She grabs Mikhail's hand which is on the control, but the feed is lost]

Ben: I'm not a liar Juliet.

Juliet: [Crying] I want to go home.

Ben: That's not our agreement. You need to stay here until your work is finished.

Juliet: [Crying] It's impossible. The mothers keep dying.

Ben: Then we'll find more mothers. Who knows...maybe there's even 1 on that plane.

[Later]

The scene then shifts to Juliet stretching her tarp out and tying it to posts to construct a shelter. As she builds the structure she remembers a conversation with Ben. They are sitting at a table inside one of the Barracks homes]

Ben: Let's go over it again.

Juliet: I know what to do

Ben: Let's go over it again, just to be sure.

Juliet: I drag Austen out into the jungle, handcuff myself to her, then tell her I was gassed, just like she was.

Ben: If she catches you in the lie?

Juliet: I'll admit to it, tell her it was the only way to earn her trust.

Ben: Good. What then?

Juliet: They'll take me back to the beach.

[While Juliet continues to talk to Ben, the scene shows her continuing to tie up the shelter. As she does this she watches the survivors, including Jin and a man who appear to be discussing fishing, Hurley and Sun preparing food, and Desmond sitting at a table]

Juliet: I know you want me to go there, but after everything we've done to them...it's going to be a problem.

[The scene then shifts back to her memory showing us her and Ben sitting at the table]

Ben: We've activated the implant in Claire. She should be symptomatic within the next 48 hours. By the time you get to that camp, you'll have a nice big crisis to solve.

[While Juliet continues to talk to Ben, the scene shows her continuing to tie up the shelter. As she does this she watches the survivors, including Charlie, Jack, Claire and Aaron who are talking.]

Juliet: I'll need supplies.

Ben: Pryce is already on his way. He'll hide the case at Ethan's old drop point. Tell Jack that you can save her. He trust's you.

[The scene shows Jack walking and seeing Juliet build the shelter. He gives her a big smile and she returns it with one of her own. The scene then shifts back to her memory showing her sitting at the table]

Ben: Are you alright?

Juliet: I'm fine.

[Ben sets a gas mask on the table in front of Juliet]

Ben: See you in a week.

[Ben rolls off in his wheelchair, Juliet takes the mask, and the scene shifts back to Juliet who is still tying the tarp to the shelter. She watches Jack fill a bottle with water. The scene ends with her providing a rather knowing and somewhat evil stare. The last shot is of Juliet's hands as she is tightly tying the last knot on the tent]

3.14 Expose

[The scene shifts to Paulo descending The Pearl Station. He explores the station using a flashlight and notices the monitors and a bathroom. He enters the bathroom and decides to store the matryoshka doll in the tank of the toilet. When he finishes he hears a voice, hides, and watches]

Ben: Who left this open?

Juliet: Tom was down here a couple of days ago.

Ben: Have him cover it up with the plane.

[They walk up to a monitor and tune it to the Swan station. Jack is visible on the screen]

Juliet: That him? Shephard?

Ben: Yes.

Juliet: He's cute. Why are we doing this? Shephard will never agree to do the surgery.

Ben: No, I can convince him to do it.

Juliet: How?

Ben: Same way I get anybody to do anything. I find out what he's emotionally invested in...and I exploit it.

Juliet: So, what, we just grab all 3 of them...Ford and Austen too.

Ben: No, they need to come to us.

Juliet: And how do we make that happen?

Ben: Michael of course.

Juliet: Are we done here? This place gives me the creeps.

[They turn off the lights and leave. Paulo then exits the bathroom and notices a walkie-talkie which he turns on to test and takes with him.]

3.13 The Man From Tallahassee

[Cut to shot of Ben sleeping in bed. Something awakens him but he doesn't see anything. He raises his electric bed to a more upright position and looks around the dark room]

Ben: Alex?

[Ben leans over and turns on his bedside lamp. Locke walks up from a corner pointing his gun at Ben]

Ben John!

Locke: Shhhh. [Whispering] Keep your voice down.

Ben: [Calmly] All right. It's all right, John. You don't have to point the gun at me. I can tell you where Jack is.

Locke: I'm not looking for Jack. I'm looking for the submarine. The submarine...where is it?

Ben: I'm not sure what you mean, John. What submarine?

Locke: The one you use to travel to and from the island. The one your man Mikhail told me about...right before I killed him.

Alex: [Outside Ben's bedroom door] Dad? Who are you talking to?

Ben: Alex, don't come in here!

[Locke crosses to the door and opens it. Alex is standing there. From the front door of the house comes a loud knocking. Locke looks at the front door, then grabs Alex and forces her into Ben's bedroom]

Alex: What...what...dad...ahh!

[Locke grabs her from behind and covers her mouth with his hand]

Locke: [Speaking to Ben] Tell her to be quiet!

Ben: Alex! Please!

Tom: [From outside the front door] Ben?! You awake?!

[Locke drags Alex into a closet in Ben's bedroom]

Alex: No! Oooh!

Tom: [From outside the front door] I'm coming in!

[Tom and another man walk into the room. Only Tom is visible to Locke as he watches from the closet door]

Ben: What is it?

Tom: It's Austen and Jarrah. They're here. Somehow they found us.

Ben: Where are they now?

Tom We captured them. We're holding them over at my place. Want me to help you get out there?

Ben: No. Separate them. I want to know how they found us.

Tom What about Juliet and Shephard? Tomorrow in the morning...

Ben: Let me worry about that. Just go.

Tom Got it.

Ben: Richard? Wait a minute.

Tom I'll wait outside.

[Tom leaves and Richard comes closer to Ben's bed. He is in shadows and his features are not visible]

Ben: I want you to bring me the man from Tallahassee.

Richard Alpert: What do you need him for?

Ben: Just do it. Now.

Richard Alpert: Ok.

[Richard leaves. Locke and Alex come out of the closet]

Locke: The man from Tallahassee? What is that...some kind of code?

Ben: No, John, unfortunately we don't have a code for "There's a man in my closet with a gun to my daughter's head". Although...we obviously should.

Locke: Sayid...he had a pack with him. [Pointing at Alex] I want her to retrieve it.

Ben: [Confused] Okay...[More for Alex's benefit] But you should know that my daughter currently hates me. So I'm not sure holding me hostage is your best option.

Alex: Dad! [Speaking to Locke] I'll get your bag.

[Later]

[Cut to interior of Ben's house in his bedroom. Locke is sitting in a chair watching Ben who is still lying in bed]

Ben: Would you mind helping me get into my chair? No tricks, I promise. I just want some dignity. You of all people should understand what it means to want some dignity.

[Locke gets up and goes to find the wheelchair]

Ben: Thank you. So, tell me John. How do you expect to pilot our submarine? I mean, it's a complicated piece of machinery. You don't just press "Submerge"
.
[Locke brings the wheelchair over to the bed]

Locke: I'll figure something out. For all you know I was a Commander in the Navy. Put your arm around my neck. I'll lift under your knees.

Ben: What's in the pack, John? If you met Mikhail that means you were in the communications station. Which means you found the explosives. So you're not planning to pilot the submarine anywhere, are you? You're planning to destroy it. I know you, John Locke.

Locke: You don't know me at all.

Ben: I know you were born in California. I know you were raised in foster care. I know you wasted a big part of your life in Tustin, pushing papers at a company that manufactured industrial boxes. I know you spent the 4 years prior to your arrival on this island in a wheelchair. And I know how you ended up in it. Tell me, John...did it hurt?

Locke: I felt my back break. What do you think?

[Later]

[Scene shifts back to Locke looking out a window from Ben's home]

Ben: It wasn't easy you know...being in that hatch with you all the time...knowing you had no business walking around...knowing I couldn't even ask you about it without telling you who I really was.

Locke: So ask me now. Now that I know who you really are.

Ben: Was it immediate? It started the moment you got here?

Locke: Yeah.

Ben: And you were just walking? The feeling returned right after the crash? That day?

Locke: That's what immediate means Ben. Your wondering why it hasn't happened for you. You're not recovering as fast as you'd like. How long's it been since Jack fixed ya? A week? Now that I think about it, how'd you get sick in the first place?

Ben: Are you afraid it will go away, John? Is that why you want to destroy the submarine? Because you know if you ever leave this island you'll be back in the chair?

Locke: [Ignoring the question] You got anything to eat?

[Later]

[the scene shifts to Locke pushing Ben's wheelchair into the living room. Ben turns on a light]

Locke: Where do you get electricity?

Ben: We have 2 giant hamsters running on a massive wheel at our secret underground cave...

Locke: Yeah, that's funny.

Ben: There's leftovers in the refrigerator. Help yourself.

[Locke walks into the kitchen, opens the refrigerator, and takes out an aluminum foil covered plate of meat]

Ben: I ate most of the dark meat. Sorry.

[Locke starts eating the meat with his hands]

Locke: Hmm. I never really...appreciated chicken until right now.

Ben: I know you think you need to do this, John, but if you blow up my submarine, I have a big problem with my people.

Locke: Is that supposed to be an incentive not to blow it up?

Ben: I was born on this island. Not many of my people can say that. Most of them were recruited and brought here and as much as they love this place...as much as they would do anything to defend it...they need to know they can leave if they want to. The sub maintains that illusion.

Locke: So you're lying to them.

Ben: [Frustrated] No. There here because they want to be here. Some of them are just not ready to make a full...commitment yet. But you John...you've already made that commitment. And now you have a choice...because if you stop and think, I can show you things. Things I know you want to see very badly. Let me put it so you'll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you John? What if I told you that somewhere on this island there's a very large box...and whatever you imagined...whatever you wanted to be in it...when you opened that box, there it would be. What would you say about that, John?

Locke: I'd say I hope that box is big enough to imagine yourself up a new submarine.

Ben: Why are you so angry, John?

Locke: Because you're cheating. You and your people. Communicate with the outside world whenever you want to you...you come and go as you please...you use electricity and running water and guns...you're a hypocrite...a Pharisee. You don't deserve to be on this island. If you had any idea what this place really was...you wouldn't be putting chicken in your refrigerator.

Ben: You've been here 80 days, John. I've been hear my entire life. So how is it you think you know this island better than I do?

Locke: Because you're in the wheelchair and I'm not.

[Locke looks out the window and sees Alex coming back. She opens the door and enters and Ben turns to her]

Ben: Did you have any problems?

[She shakes her head no and Locke takes Sayid's backpack from her]

Locke: Okay. Here's how this is gonna work. She's gonna take me to the sub. Once were there, I let her go.

Ben: John, she's done enough. Let me take you.

Locke: I don't want you to slow me down. [To Alex] Come on. Let's go.

Ben: John, before you go you should know...Jack and I made a deal. In less than an hour he's leaving the island on that submarine and it's a 1 way ticket. The anomaly wiped out our communications. We have no way of contacting the outside world. Which means when that sub leaves, it can never come back. So whether you destroy the submarine or whether you let it go, the end result is the same. No one will find this island.

Locke: [To Alex] Let's go. Come on.

[They leave the house and start walking toward the sub]

Alex: You know he's manipulating you, right?

Locke: How's that?

Alex: That's what my father does. He manipulates people. He makes you think it's your idea, but it's his.

Locke: I'll have to keep that in mind.

[They walk through some woods and a submarine is visible next to a dock]

Alex: The submarines down there. At the end of the dock.

Locke: I'm sorry I had to involve you in this.

Locke trots down to the dock. From the woods Danielle watches the scene and for the first time in 16 years, she sees Alex as Alex walks away. Alex does not see her. The scene shifts to Locke walking down the pier and climbing down into the submarine. He walks down the sub's hallway and turns on the lights. The scene then shifts to Ben who is putting away the leftovers in the fridge when Jack and Juliet walk into the kitchen]

Jack: Look I know you don't owe me anything, but I need to ask you for one last favor.

Ben: You don't knock?

Jack” I need you to let my friends go...after I'm gone.

Ben: And if I said no would that stop you from leaving?

Jack: [Nodding yes] Of course it would.

Ben: Your friends are only here to rescue you, but you seem to be doing a good job of rescuing yourself so...I suppose there's no reason to keep them here.

Jack: Do I have your word on that?

Ben: You have my word.

[Ben rolls his chair forward and shakes hands with Jack]

Ben: I'll let them go, just as soon as you've left the island.

[Jack walks away and Ben turns to Juliet]

Ben: Well, I guess this is it.

Juliet: Thank you, Ben...for keeping your promise.

[Ben smiles, they turn, and walk out the door and the scene shifts to a soaked Locke who is walking from the peer when he is spotted by Ryan, Tom, Jack, Juliet, and others]

[Later]

[The scene shifts to Locke who is handcuffed to an overhead pipe in a dark room. The door opens and Richard Alpert and Ben enter]

Ben: Well, John, you've really gone and done it now.

Locke: You don't have to pretend to be disappointed anymore. We both know you wanted it to happen. That's why you left the C4 in Sayid's bag because you wanted me to make it happen.

Ben: Uncuff him please, Richard.

[Richard steps forward to uncuff Locke]

Richard Alpert: You gonna do anything stupid?

Locke: No sir.

[Richard uncuffs Locke]

Ben: Do you remember earlier, John, when you called me a cheater...when you said I didn't deserve to live on this island? Well get this, there I was shaking hands with Jack and thinking I'd give almost anything to come up with a way to stop him from leaving...because to let him go would be a sign of weakness, of failure, of defeat. People would see that. They would know it. And that, John, would be the end of me. But to kill him...that would be cheating...because my people also heard me make a promise and to break my word...that would be the end of me too. And then you came striding out of the jungle, John, to make my dream come true.

Locke: You're not gonna start talking about the magic box again are you?

Ben: No John. I'm gonna show you what came out of it.

[Locke is surprised and Richard helps Locke to his feet. Richard then pushes Ben's wheelchair as they walk down the hall]

Ben: When I asked you earlier if it hurt when you suffered your injury, I think you misunderstood me. Seems fairly obvious that when a person's back smashes into a hard surface after being thrown from a building, that that's gonna sting a little. But I really wasn't asking about the physical pain.

Locke: What you wanna know if it hurt my feelings?

Ben: No John. I wanted to know what it felt like when your own father tried to kill you. He's the reason you destroyed the submarine, isn't he? You're afraid. You're afraid of him and this is the one place he can never find you. This is the one place he can never get to.

Locke: What do you want from me?

Ben: I don't know how it happened, but you seem to have some communion with this island, John, and that makes you very very important. You have no idea what you're talking about of course, but in time you'll have a better understanding of things. So what do I want? I want to help you, John.

Locke: Why?
Ben: Because I'm in a wheelchair and you're not. Are you ready to see?

[Richard takes the keys and opens the door. A hissing sound is heard when it opens and Locke looks inside to see his father, Anthony, looking terrified, beaten, bound, gagged, and sitting in a chair]

Locke: Dad?

3.09 Stranger in a Strange Land

[In the Hydra operating room, we see Ivan about to inject a needle in Ben's infected back. Jack busts in.]

JACK: I wouldn't do that!

BEN: The cavalry has arrived, at last.

JACK: I'd be more impressed with you people if you had a good surgeon.

BEN: We had an excellent surgeon, Jack. His name was Ethan.

JACK: You've got a very serious infection, Ben. That infected tissue needs to be reincised, debreeded; and you need be closely monitored from here on out. There might be nerve damage or any number of other complications. You might not walk again.

BEN: Your bedside manner leaves something to be desired.

JACK: Well, then it's too bad you're stuck with me.

BEN: Am I?

JACK: You need a doctor, Ben -- someone to stay with you -- bring you back to good health.

BEN: And, here we go again. I've already given you a ticket off this island, Jack. What's it going to cost me this time?

JACK: Right now, you're people are in a room deciding whether or not to execute Juliet. You're going to stop it.

BEN: Juliet doesn't care about you, Jack. It doesn't matter what she's done. No matter what you think -- she's one of us.

JACK: Do we have a deal or not?

BEN [to Alex]: Does Isabel have a walkie?

ALEX: They're already in the meeting.

BEN: Then get me something to write on.

[later]

[Scene switches to the Others on the beach preparing to ferry people to a larger boat offshore. Tom kneels with an umbrella over the prone Ben who is lying on his side.]

ISABEL [to Jack]: "He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us." Your tattoos -- that's what they say.

JACK: That's what they say. That's not what they mean.

Ben gives one of his enigmatic smiles, but seems very pleased with Jack’s comment.

3.07 Not in Portland

[Cut to a shot of Ben's face in the operating room. He's lying face down on the operating table, so we're seeing a shot of him from the floor up to see his face.]

TOM: Is it true?

JACK: Is what true?

TOM: What you said -- did Juliet really ask you to kill him?

JACK: Yeah, and in about 40 minutes she's going to get her wish.

BEN [coming to]: Hey, that's not helping anything. Now, could somebody please get Juliet?

[Later]

Back on the island, we see Juliet pacing outside as Tom approaches.]

TOM: Juliet, Ben's awake.

JULIET: How?

TOM: Shephard says he's a spinal surgeon, not an anesthesiologist. Ben's asking for you.

[Later]

[Back in the operating room.]

JACK: I stopped the surgery.

BEN: I know. I've been able to hear you for a few minutes now. It's very clever of you. I should have seen it coming.

JACK: Are you in pain? I can...

BEN: No, but thanks all the same.

[Juliet and Tom enter.]

BEN: I'd like to speak to Juliet alone, please, Jack.

JACK: No. No, I'm sorry.

BEN: Please, I'm asking you one gentleman to another. It won't hurt you to give me three minutes, will it -- knowing I have only 27 left?

JACK [exiting, to Juliet]: If you touch him, if you...

JULIET: I won't.

JACK: You've got three minutes.

[Jack moves to the observation window and watches Juliet sit next to Ben. We see Ben talking, but can't hear what he's saying. Tom joins Jack at the window.]

TOM: I'm Tom, by the way.

[Jack doesn't respond; and we see Ben talking again, but can't hear him. Jack and Tom continue watching.]

TOM: They've got history.

[Juliet exits the operating room and goes to Jack.]

JULIET: I would like you to go back in there, put Ben under, and finish the surgery.

JACK: And why would I want to do that?

JULIET: Because I'm going to go help your friends escape.

[Back in the Hydra station.]

JACK: I want to know what he said.

JULIET: I've been on this island for 3 years, Jack. 3 years, 2 months, and 28 days. He said that if I let him live and I helped you -- that he would finally let me go home

3.6 I Do

Shot of The Hydra where Juliet and Ben enter Jack's cell and he looks at x-rays]
Jack You took these blood tests, made all the notations?
[Juliet nods her head yes]
Jack How old are the x-rays?
Juliet A week.
Jack The tumor on your spine is borderline inoperable and at the rate it's going that borderline goes away in about 1 week.
Ben Oh.
Jack The OR we were in, is that fully equipped?
Juliet Yes.
Jack Anesthesia? Sterile?
Juliet Yes.
Jack You need to be in surgery yesterday.
Ben Alright, then. Whatever you need, it's yours. I'm ready.
Jack [Laughing] No, I think you misunderstood me. I didn't say I was gonna do it. I just wanted you to understand how you're gonna die. You think I believe you people? You think I trust you, that I'm gonna just do the surgery and hope that you let me go?!
Juliet Jack.
[Jack throws the x-rays at ]
Jack Don't!
Ben Well Jack, I'm very disappointed in your decision.
Jack Well Ben, at least you won't have to be disappointed for very long.

[Later, as Jack and Kate stand at the glass]

Kate [Crying] They're gonna kill Sawyer! God, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, but she said that if you do it and you do it soon they'll let us go.
Jack And you believe them?
Kate I have to. Jack, please.
Jack We're done here.
Kate Jack.
Jack Hey!
[Shot shifts to Ben who is watching and listening on a closed circuit monitor]
Jack We're done in here.

[Later]
Shot of Jack laying down in his cell in The Hydra when the speaker system squawks and awakens him]
Jack Who is this? Hello? Hello.
Alex Try it, the door.
[Jack does and it opens and he explores the hall, discovers the monitor observation room, finds and takes a gun, and notices Kate and Sawyer kissing and snuggling and Jack is then startled by Ben]
Ben If it helps, I was surprised too. If I were a betting man, I would have picked her and you.
[Jack holds the gun to Ben's chest]
Jack Shut up!
Ben Well, I suppose this would be the proverbial nail in my coffin, wouldn't it?
Jack Tomorrow.
Ben Sorry.
Jack Tomorrow morning, first thing. And everything I've mentioned before, the instruments, the anesthesia, and someone who can hold a damn clamp.
Ben Yes. Of course.
Jack I'll get it out... your tumor... and I'll keep you alive. But I need your word. I need what you promised me before. I need to get the hell off this island.
Ben Done.

[Later]
[Jack and Juliet enter the OR where Ben is prepped and lying on a table]
Ben You get nervous... before you do surgery?
Jack I used to, but not any more. No.
Ben Whatever happens, everything will be very different, won't it?
Jack No doubt about it.
Ben Juliet, did Alex ask about me?
Juliet No. We took her home last night. I don't know where she is now.
Ben Well, see ya on the other side. I'm ready.
Jack I need you to count down from 20.
Ben 20, 19, 18...
Jack Scalpel.
[Jack begins an incision on Ben's back as Pickett looks on from above]

3.5 The Cost of Living

Shot of Jack doing pull-ups from an overhead bar in his containment cell. Ben walks in dressed in a simple white shirt and carrying more white clothing]
Ben Good evening, Jack.
Jack Good evening, Ben.
Ben I was hoping you might join me for a walk. [Jack laughs] What?
Jack Well, you say that like...you're not going to just throw a bag over my head and drag me out of here if I say no.
Ben Then don't say no. Why don't you put this on. [He hands Jack the white clothing] I'll wait outside.
Jack Does it hurt?
Ben Sorry?
Jack Your neck, does it hurt? Any numbness in your fingers and toes like pins and needles when your foot falls asleep, but permanent?
Ben Why are you asking me these questions, Jack?
Jack Because, Ben, you have a tumor on your spine. An aggressive tumor...that...is going to kill you. I don't know when those x-rays were taken that I saw, but unless they were very recent...you're not going to be taking walks much longer.
Ben I have no idea what you're talking about.
Jack Ok. My mistake then. [Jack finishes getting dressed] I'm ready whenever you are.
[Shot of Jack being led through the jungle at night with Ben and a man carrying a torch and another man carrying a rifle. They stop at the edge of the beach where several others are gathered, all dressed in the same, simple white clothing. Several torches are lit around the beach. Colleen Pickett's body is covered on a small raft. Danny is kneeling next to the body]
Ben Stay here.
[Ben walks over to the crowd]
Ben [From a distance, barely audible as Jack would hear it] As we prepare to send Colleen on her way, I'd like to take a moment...
[Juliet walks up behind Jack]
Juliet I hate funerals. [Jack turns to look at her] He let you out?
Jack Gave me a new shirt, too.
[They both watch as the funeral proceeds. Ben is still talking, inaudible]
Juliet Bye, Jack.
[Juliet walks to the crowd around the body. The body and raft are set afloat in the ocean and then lit on fire with a torch. A song plays over the speaker: Brenda Lee - I Wonder. Lyrics heard: I wonder my little darling, Where can you be this moonlit night? Are you holding someone tight? I wonder. My heart's, my heart is aching. And I'm a fool, I'm a fool to let it go on breaking]
Ben [speaking quietly to Juliet] Why did you show him my x-rays?
Juliet I didn't tell him they were yours. But I guess you did.

[Later]
Jack [laughs] You people have cheeseburgers?
Juliet You have no idea what I went through to make this for you. I killed the cow, processed the meat, baked the bun. And the fries...try rendering animal fat.
Jack No ketchup?
[The door opens and Ben walks in]
Ben I'd like to talk to him.
Juliet Ok. So talk to him.
Ben Alone. Please.
Jack I'm fine with her being here.
Ben And I'm thrilled that your fine, Jack, but it's private. Doctor patient confidentiality.
Juliet Sure. Of course.
[Juliet leaves the room]
Jack Mind if I eat?
[Jack takes a bite of the burger]
Ben We had such a wonderful plan to break you, Jack.
Jack Break me?
Ben Wear you down till you were convinced we weren't your enemies. Get you to trust us. And then of course we'd lead you to believe that you were choosing to do...whatever we asked you to do. All of this of course assumed that you would get...invested.
Jack Invested in what?
Ben Has it not occurred to you that Juliet bears a striking resemblance to your ex-wife.
Jack Why are you telling me this?
Ben I'm telling you this, Jack, because my wonderful plan...got shot to sunshine when you saw my damned x-rays and figured out I was dying.
Jack All of this...you brought me here to operate on you. You...you want me to save your life.
Ben No, I want you to want to save my life. But we're beyond that now, so...all I can ask is that you think about it. Do you believe in God, Jack?
Jack Do you?
Ben 2 days after I found out I had a fatal tumor on my spine...a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky. And if that's not proof of God, I don't know what is.

3.4 Every Man for Himself

[Benry runs into the Hydra aquarium where Jack is playing Juliet]
Benry Juliet! I need you!
Benry The sub is back. We have a situation. So come with me now.

[Later, at Sawyer’s bear cage]
Sawyer Oh yeah. The Big Kahuna. Lunch already?
Benry What do you weigh?
Benry What. Do. You. Weigh.
Benry How old are you?
Benry Don't lie.
Benry Good.
[Benry steps in the puddle of water and starts to open the door of the cage when Sawyer grabs Benry's arm and begins pushing the button to create the electric charge]
Sawyer Sianara sucker!
[The electricity does not discharge]
Sawyer What did you do?
Benry We turned it off.
[Benry hits Sawyer in the face through the bars with a baton, causing Sawyer to fall and then Benry opens the cages and beats Sawyer with the baton, then kicks him in the head causing him to go unconscious followed by a shot of Sawyer waking back up with his vision blurry and he can hear 2 people talking]
Tom ...2 days since the sky turned purple, we've been blind, our comm's are all down and I can't get them back up again. And in case you forgot Colleen's in critical...
Benry Juliet's taking care of her.
Sawyer Where am I?
[Shot of Sawyer lying down strapped to a large table with his shirt off]
Sawyer What the hell are you doing to me? Let me out!
Benry Jason.
Sawyer Let me out!
Jason (An Other) Bite down on this please.
Sawyer You bite down on it!
Benry It's for the pain.
Sawyer [Muffled] Wait!
[A wooden stick is forced into Sawyer's mouth and a very large syringe with liquid in it is prepared]
Sawyer [Muffled] Wait! Wait! Let me out, now!
Benry God, I hate needles

Later [Shot of Sawyer waking up again still strapped to the table with a large bloody bandage is over his heart and Tom walks in carrying a cage with a white rabbit in it that has the number 8 painted in black on the rabbit's back then Benry takes the cage and places it on Sawyer's chest]
Sawyer What the hell?
Benry Shhh.
[Benry grabs the cage with both hands and starts shaking it violently]
Benry Hey. Hey! come on!
[Benry continues to violently shake the cage with the rabbit in it]
Benry Hey, move! Move! Hey, come on come on come on come on!
Sawyer What are you doing!?
[Benry continues to violently shake the cage]
Benry Come on come on come on come on come on! Let's move it! Let's move it! Let's move it! Hippity Hop!
Sawyer Come on! What are you doing!
Benry Hippity Hop! Hippity Hop! Let's move it! Let's move it! Let's move it!
Sawyer What's your problem!
Benry Come on come on come on! Heyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyhey!
[The rabbit drops motionless to the cage floor and appears dead]
Sawyer Did you just kill that bunny?
Benry You know what a pacemaker is?
Sawyer What?
Benry They stick them in the tickers of people who've had bypass work who's hearts need just a little jump. A...kick start. The rabbit had a small pacemaker set to deliver it's kick start should it get too excited. Or anxious or frightened. Or should it tried to escape.
[Benry picks up a watch and puts it on Sawyer]
Benry Assuming that you were telling the truth about your age and weight your resting heart rate should be about 70 beats per minute. Your active heart rat, however...that would be about 140. Which is the point at which your pacemaker...will cause your heart to explode.
[Benry removes the straps holding Sawyer to the table]
Benry Which is how I know that you're going to start behaving now. The watch monitors your pulse. If you get within 15 beats of your danger zone it'll start to beep. If and when it beeps you're going to want to relax yourself. Do some deep breathing. Some yoga.
Sawyer If you want me dead why don't you just shoot me and get it over with.
Benry Because we're not killers, James. Oh, and one other thing. Kate.
Sawyer You touch her I swear...
Benry You tell her what we did. What we put in you, that we're watching you. You tell her any of these things...we'll put one in her too.

Later [Shot of the monitoring room where Benry and Tom are watching Sawyer]
Tom You know Danny wants to kill him.
Benry Danny can wait.
Tom Should I bring Shephard back.
Benry No. I want him to sit with her for a while longer.
[Shot of Jack handcuffed to the operating table with Colleen's body covered by a sheet when Juliet walks in the room]

Later [at Sawyer’s cage]
Benry Psst. Psssst. Good morning. Let's go for a walk.

Later [Shot of Benry, Sawyer and 2 others climbing a rocky, hilly area]
Benry Not much further James. Just to the top of the next rise.
Sawyer What's up there?
Benry Something I want you to see.
Sawyer Is it that little place you always wanted George.
Benry Sorry?
Sawyer What, don't you read? It's from "Of Mice and Men". You'd like it. Puppies get killed.
[They continue climbing and Sawyer's watch starts beeping]
Sawyer Bring me up here to kill me. Make that thing you put inside me blow up my damned heart?
Benry Your hearts not going to blow up James. The only thing we put inside you was doubt. Oh, the watch is a heart rate monitor, nothing more.
[Benry reaches into a bag he has been carrying and pulls out a white rabbit with a black 8 painted on its back]
Benry Look. We gave him a sedative, not a pacemaker.
Sawyer How do I know that's the same bunny. That you didn't just paint an 8 on another one.
Benry You don't.
[Sawyer gives Benry a roundhouse hit to the mouth]
Sawyer You son of a bitch.
Benry [Through a bleeding mouth] The rabbit wasn't the thing I wanted to show you.
[They walk over a rise and before them is the end of the island and then ocean and then across a relatively short span of ocean another island can be seen]
Benry You ever been to Alcatraz? Take the tour? Right now you're standing on a small island roughly twice the size of Alcatraz. And that over there? That's your island, the one you've come to know and love. I just wanted you to know there's nowhere to run.
Sawyer You did all this just to...just to keep me in a damned cage?
Benry We did all this because the only way to gain a con man's respect is to con him. And you're pretty good...Sawyer. We're a lot better. Funny thing is, us telling you about the pace maker wasn't what kept you in line. It was when I threatened her! You work so hard to make her think you don't care. That you don't need her. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. It don't make no difference who the guy is, long as he's with you. I tell ya. I tell ya...a guy gets too lonely and he gets sick.
Sawyer What the hell are you talking about?
Benry It's from "Of Mice and Men". Don't you read? Come on. Let's get you back to your cage.

3.2 Glass Ballerina

[We see Jack sitting in the corner of his cell. Someone opens the door for her and Juliet enters carrying a tray of food.]
JULIET: Are you feeling any better? I made the soup myself, but I won't take it the wrong way if you don't like it.
[Juliet exits, goes to another door and knocks. Ben opens the door and we can see a bank of screens used to monitor what's happening in various locations, like Jack's cell.]
BEN: You never made soup for me.
[A woman, Colleen, climbs down a ladder and enters the room where Juliet and Ben are.]
COLLEEN: Am I interrupting something?
JULIET: Would it really matter if you were?
COLLEEN: We have a situation -- Ryan radioed in -- the Iraqi found the decoy village.
BEN: Good, it's what we wanted.
COLLEEN: Ryan followed him back to the shore and they have a sailboat.
BEN: How?!
COLLEEN: I have no idea.
JULIET: So they have a boat -- sailing in circles will keep them busy.
COLLEEN: They could find us. [long pause] Ben?
BEN: I'm thinking. How quickly can you put together a team?
COLLEEN: Within the hour.
BEN: Then don't waste time talking to us. [Colleen starts to exit] Hey Colleen, I want that boat.
[Much later]
KATE: You taste like fish biscuits. So what do we do now?
SAWYER: Well, Shortcake, now we wait for these bastards to make a mistake.
[We suddenly see this conversation between Kate and Sawyer is being watched by Ben on one of the screens in the room he was in earlier.]
SAWYER: Sooner or later, they're going to let their guard down. And when they do, we're going to be there to put them in their place.
[We see Jack in his cell, on the floor with his back up against the wall. The camera pulls back and we can see Ben is in the cell.]
BEN: Hello, Jack. [he sits on a small chair he brought in] You know what's crazy, Jack? A week ago, you and I were in exactly the opposite situation. I was the one locked up and you were the one coming in for visits. And I know that you were angry that I lied to you about who I was; but, hell, do you blame me? I mean, let's face it, if I had told you I was one of those people that you and your friends have been calling Others all this time it would have been right back to Sayid and his -- fists. Wouldn't it?
JACK: What do you want from me?
BEN: I want for you to change your at--perspective. And, the first step in doing that would be for me to be decent enough to introduce myself honestly, so -- [he crouches down beside Jack and extends his hand to shake] Hi, my name is Benjamin Linus and I've lived on this island all my life. [pause] You're not going to shake?
[Ben walks to the door and someone starts rolling a cart into the room.]
BEN: Bring it in, please.
JACK: Where are Kate and Sawyer?
BEN: They're fine; and they're close. That's all I'm able to tell you right now.
JACK: You can tell me anything you want.
BEN: Fair enough. It's all I want to tell you. I'm going to make this really simple, Jack. If you cooperate; we send you home.
JACK: Cooperate with what?
BEN: When the time is right, I'll tell you...
JACK: You tell me now.
BEN: Patience, Jack. Patience.
JACK: Home -- is that where you sent Walt and Michael?
BEN: Yes.
JACK [laughing]: If you could leave this island why would you still be here?
BEN: Yes, Jack, why would we be here?
JACK: You're lying. You're stuck here just like we are. You don't have any...
BEN: Your flight crashed on September 22nd, 2004. Today is November 29th. That means you've been on our island for 69 days. Yes, we do have contact with the outside world, Jack. That's how we know that during those 69 days your fellow Americans re-elected George W. Bush; Christopher Reeve has passed away; the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. [Jack starts laughing] What?
JACK: If you wanted me to believe this, you probably should have picked somebody else besides the Red Sox.
BEN: No, they were down 3 games to none against the Yankees in the league championship, and then they won 8 straight.
JACK [laughing]: Sure. Sure, of course they did.
[Ben turns toward the cart that was rolled in the turns on a TV. It shows the Red Sox winning the World Series. Jack moves toward the TV in disbelief and watches the end of the game. Ben turns the TV off.]
BEN: That's home, Jack. Right there, on the other side of that glass. And if you listen to me -- if you trust me -- if you do what I tell you when the time comes -- I'll take you there. I will take you home.
---------------

3.1 A Tale of Two Cities

We see the person we know as Henry Gale coming out of another house. Everyone looks up at the sky. They see a plane flying over which then breaks apart in mid-air and crashes.]

GALE: Goodwin, did you see where the tail landed?
GOODWIN: Yeah, probably in the water.
GALE: You run and you can make that shore line in an hour. Ethan, get up there to that fuselage. There may actually be survivors; and you're one of them. A passenger -- in shock -- come up with an adequate story if they ask. Stay quiet if they don't. Listen, learn, don't get involved. I want lists in 3 days. Go.
[Goodwin and Ethan run off. Henry notices Julie standing nearby holding a Steven King book.]
GALE: So I guess I'm out of the book club.

[Later on the beach]

[Tom and three armed guards escort Kate through a covered walkway and to a beach where Henry is waiting under a thatch-roofed structure at a table laden with breakfast foods. Henry pulls out a chair for Kate. Kate sees a pair of handcuffs lying on the table.]
GALE: Sorry, I'm going to have to ask you to put those on, Kate.
KATE: And if I don't?
GALE: Then you don't get any coffee.
[Kate puts the cuffs on.]
GALE: A little tighter. [Kate gives a defiant look] Please.
[Kate makes the cuffs tighter.]
KATE: What did you do with Sawyer and Jack?
GALE: Now why Sawyer?
KATE: Why Sawyer what?
GALE: He's the first one you asked about. "What did you do with Sawyer and Jack?"
KATE: You don't know me.
GALE: Of course I don't.
KATE: I want my clothes back.
GALE: We burned them.
KATE: Why did you bring me here? Why did you make me put on this dress? Why are you feeding me breakfast?
GALE: I brought you here so you'd look out at the water and feel comforted -- comforted that your friends were looking out at the same ocean. I gave you the dress so that you'd feel like a lady. And I wanted you to eat your food with a real live fork and feel civilized. I did all those things so that you'd have something nice to hold on to. Because, Kate, the next two weeks are going to be very unpleasant.

[Later inside the Hydra}

GALE [appearing]: She's telling the truth, Jack.
JACK: I swear to god, I will kill her.
GALE: Okay. Have her open the door and she dies anyway. We all do.
[Jack pushes Julie away and starts to open the door. Henry and Julie start running. Henry runs out a door and quickly closes it behind him, leaving Julie in the same area as Jack. We hear a loud creaking sound and suddenly a huge gush water pushes the door in and throws Jack backward. Julie grabs onto a pipe and grabs Jack.]

[Later, inside the Hydra]

JULIE: Yes, Jack, she's very happy. Now, I'd like to bring you some food and water. But this time I need to know that you'll behave. Can I trust you, Jack? Put your back against the wall, please.
[Jack moves to the far wall and sits down. Julie exits without giving Jack any food. We see Henry waiting for her.]
GALE: Good work, Juliet.
JULIE: Thank you, Ben.

2.24 Live Together, Die Alone Part 2

[We see the boat that we saw in Exodus arrive at the pier. Henry Gale gets out and is obviously the one in charge. He strides up to Jack.]
GALE: Hello again. [to Mr. Friendly] Where's your beard?
MR. FRIENDLY: I think they know.
GALE [to Michael]: Alight, let's take care of business, shall we?
[Later]

DESMOND [turning the key]: I love you, Penny.
[The screen fades to white.]
[We see Gale and everyone on the pier. The ground shakes, there's a bright light and a strange sound, and everyone covers their ears. We see Sayid, Sun and Jin on the boat, covering their ears. We see the people on the beach reacting the same way. The light and sound fade. We see an object falling from the sky. Bernard moves Claire to safety, right before the hatch door with the quarantine stencil almost falls on them.]
[Later]

[We see Gale and Michael at the pier.]
GALE: I'm not happy about the arrangement that was made with you Michael, but we got more than we bargained for when Walt joined us, so I suppose this is what's best. And you let me go, set me free -- you lived up to your word. We live up to our word, too. Do you know how to drive a boat?
MICHAEL: Yeah, I can drive a boat.
GALE: Good, then you're going to take this boat and follow a compass bearing of 325, and if you do that exactly, you and your son will find rescue.
MICHAEL: That's it? I follow the bearing and me and my son get rescued?
GALE: Yes.
MICHAEL: How do you know I won't tell people about where I was?
GALE: Maybe you will, maybe you won't. But it won't matter. Once you leave, you'll never be able to get back here. And my hunch is you won't say a word to anybody because if you do, people will find out what you did to get your son back.
MICHAEL: My friends -- I was promised you wouldn't hurt them.
GALE: A deal's a deal.
MICHAEL: Who are you people?
GALE: We're the good guys, Michael. Alright, she's all yours.
MICHAEL: What? What, am I stupid? Where's my son?
GALE: Walt's inside.
[Michael runs to the boat.]
GALE: Bon voyage, Michael.
MICHAEL: Walt!
WALT: Dad! Dad!
MICHAEL: Come here, come here [they hug]. You okay?
WALT: Yeah.
MICHAEL: You sure? Okay, I've got you now. It's going to be okay now. We're going home, Walt. We are going home.
[Gale motions to Ms. Klugh and she removes Hurley's gag.]
MS. KLUGH: Hugo, you can go back to your camp.
HURLEY: What?
MS. KLUGH: Go back. Your job is to tell the rest of your people they can never come here.
HURLEY: But what about my friends?
GALE: Your friends are coming home with us.

2.20 Two for the Road

[Back on the island we see Ana enter the armory.]
ANA: Hey, Henry, what do you say? How long are you going to keep up this hunger strike, Henry? I ever tell you I was a cop? I've been around a lot of killers in my life. You know what surprises me most about them? How much they love to talk. But you're different, Henry. Hmm? Quiet.
GALE: [whispers something inaudible (possibly: You insult.)]
ANA: What was that?
GALE: [repeats the whisper twice.]
ANA [getting in Gale's face]: If you're going to say something; you're going to have to speak up.
[Gale suddenly stands and knocks Ana back. He grabs her and starts strangling her.]
GALE: You killed 2 of us -- good people who were leaving you alone. You're the killer, Ana-Lucia.
[Gale and Ana struggle, but he pins her. Just as it looks like she's done for, Locke hits Gale in the back of the head with his crutch.]
LOCKE: I guess he decided to start talking, huh?
[We see Locke examining a blast door area in the ceiling of the hatch. Then we see him unlock the armory door.]
GALE: If you've come to apologize, I forgive for hitting me with your crutch. I'm so glad my head didn't break it.
LOCKE: Why?
GALE: Now that's a broad question.
LOCKE: Why'd you try to hurt Ana-Lucia, but not me?
GALE: I'm not sure I know what you're getting at, John.
LOCKE: I was trapped under that blast door, helpless. You could've crushed my skull, but you didn't do a thing. Why didn't you?
GALE: Because you're one of the good ones, John.
LOCKE: What? Good what?
GALE: None of this matters. I'm dead anyway. The doctor's gone to make a trade and we both know he'll come back empty-handed and then I've lost my value. So either Jack comes back here and kills me or my people find out where I'm being held and they do it.
LOCKE: Why would your own people want to kill you?
GALE: Because the man in charge -- he's a great man, John, a brilliant man -- but he's not a forgiving man. He'll kill me because I failed, John. I failed my mission.
LOCKE: What mission?
GALE: When that woman caught me in her trap I was on my way here, John. I was coming for you.
[We see Ana open the armory door. She slides the swiss army knife to Gale.]
ANA: Pick it up. Cut yourself loose.
GALE: What?
ANA: Just do it.
GALE: Why?
ANA: You know why.
[Gale cuts himself free.]
GALE: He kept saying you were misunderstood.
ANA: What are you talking about?
GALE: Goodwin. Yes, he told us all about you, Ana -- how he thought you were worthy, and that he could change you. But he was wrong. And it cost him his life.
ANA: He was going to kill me.
GALE: Was he?
ANA: Are you done?
GALE: Yes, Ana, I'm done.
[Ana draws her gun and points it at Gale's head.]
GALE: So, this is it, huh?
ANA: Yes, Henry. This is it.
[Later, after Michael has shot Ana and Libby]

[Michael, surprised, turns and shoots her twice. He opens the armory door. He and Gale stare at each other for a long moment. Michael shoots himself in the arm.]

2.19 S.O.S.

Ana Lucia: Two days now. no food, no water, nothing to say.

Jack: I'm tired of waiting.
(He enters the armory)

Jack: I hear you've lost your appetite.

(Henry stares straight ahead, ignoring him)

Jack: Okay. Don't talk. I was never that good at bedside manner anyway. I'm gonna change that dressing on your shoulder. If you try anything, we've got a problem.

(AL watches from doorway. Jack rips off bandage. Henry flinches.)

Jack: So Henry. Henry, I was thinking about something you were saying before we found out who you are. This is gonna sting. (Henry grimaces and groans as Jack applies disenfectant.) Yeah, you were saying if you were one of them, that you'd lead us into a trap, capture our people, force a trade, us for you. Pretty good idea, Henry, and since you are one of them, I thought now might be a good time to use it. I'm going out to the line that we're not supposed to cross and telling them we've got you. And if they want you back it's gonna cost 'em. And when we get Walt back, you might just have been worth all the trouble.

Henry: They'll never give you Walt.

(Later, outside the armory. Locke speaks through the closed door.}

Locke: Henry, can you hear me? (Knocks) It's John, Henry. Henry, did you enter the numbers? Did you push the button or not? (Knocking louder) Henry, I need to know! I want you to answer me! (Pounding on door) Answer me! Answer me! You hear me!

(Cut to inside the armory where Henry Gale sits with that strange smile.)

2.18 Dave

[Armory. Henry’s bound, arms wide, as if he’s hanging on a crucifixion cross.]

Henry: He was dead already. Four months ago, I was part of the search party. Henry Gale was hanging out of the basket, neck broken.

Sayid: So he was already dead.

Henry: Yes.

Sayid: So then you buried him and left the grave marked.

Henry: Yes.

Sayid: You really should have checked his wallet before you did that. [Pulls out $20 bill] I assume Henry Gale did not have any paper upon which to compose his thoughts so he had to improvise. There wasn’t much space for that. [Sayid begins to read from the bill] Jennifer, well, you were right. Crossing the Pacific isn’t easy. I owe you a beer. I’m hiking to one of the beaches to start a signal fire. But if you’re reading this I guess I didn’t make it. I’m sorry. I love you Jenny. Always have. Always will. Yours, Henry.

Sayid: So tell me, how did Henry Gale write a note to his wife with a broken neck?

Henry: Wasn’t me. I didn’t kill him. You don’t understand.

Sayid: How did you know his wife’s name? Did you interrogate him?

Henry: Please, just listen. I’m just a---

Sayid: How many of you are there?

Henry: If I told you about them you have no idea what he’ll do.

Sayid: He?

Ana Lucia: You mean their leader, the guy with the beard?

Henry: Him!? He’s no one! Nothing!

Sayid: Whare are your people?

Henry: I can’t tell---

Sayid: How many of you are there?!

Henry: You don’t understand!

Sayid: Understand this. [Pulls out gun] You have three seconds to answer my question. How many of you are there? One!

Henry: He’ll kill me!

Sayid: I’ll kill you. Two!

Ana Lucia: Sayid!

Henry: I am not a bad person!

Sayid: Three. [Gun goes off but AL diverts Sayid’s arm]

Ana Lucia: What the hell’s wrong with you?

Sayid: He’s a liar! [he leaves]

Henry [ to AL] Thank you.

Ana Lucia : Shut up.

[Later, Locke enters armory]
Locke: What's your name? Your real name?

Henry: Just keep calling me Henry. I’ve gotten used to it.

Locke: Did you get caught on purpose? You and your people have been here for god knows how long and you got caught in a net?

Henry: God doesn't know.

Locke: Excuse me?

Henry: god doesn't know how long we've been here, John. He can't see this island any better than the rest of the world can. May I ask you a question? What possible reason could I have for putting myself through all this?

Locke: Maybe your people were looking for this place.

Henry: This place? This place is a joke, John.

Locke: What are you talking about?

Henry: I crawled through your vents and I stood at your computer as the alarm beeped, and you know what happened? The timer went all the way down to zero, and then some funny red pictures flipped up in its place. They looked like heiroglyphics; I'm no expert. And then things got real interesting. There was a loud clunking and a hum, like a magnet, a big magnet, it was really very frightening. And you know what happened next? Nothing happened, John. Nothing happened at all. Your timer just flipped back to 108. I never entered the numbers. I never pressed the button.

Locke: You're lying.

Henry: No. I'm done lying.

2.17 Lockedown

Back in the hatch, we see Gale at the dining table with Locke and Jack.]
JACK [giving Gale paper]: Draw it again -- the map to your balloon.
GALE: I was joking. I was making a joke. There's nothing out there besides my balloon. I was just frustrated. It was a stupid thing to say. I'm sorry.
LOCKE: It's too late anyway. She's already long gone, Jack.
JACK: So, what's done is done?
LOCKE: That's right.
JACK: Put him back in the armory. [he exits]
GALE: Why do you let him talk to you like that? [Locke grabs him by the collar and forcefully takes him to the armory] Hey, wait, I...
LOCKE: Shut up!
GALE: John, I'm sorry. John?
[We see Gale reading in the armory. Locke is listening to music and riding the exercise bike. We hear a beep sound and a voice through heavy static.]
LOUDSPEAKER VOICE: 20 minutes to lockdown.
[Locke stops riding the bike. We hear feedback from the speaker. Locke stops the music and checks on the computer. The screen looks normal and the timer shows 47 minutes. We hear more feedback as Locke tries to fix the loudspeaker. The volume on the speaker increases dramatically, scaring Locke and getting Gale's attention.]
LOUDSPEAKER VOICE: ... 17 minutes to lockdown.
GALE: What was that? John, what's the matter?
[Back in the hatch, we hear more of the broken up loudspeaker message.]
LOUDSPEAKER VOICE: ... please proceed... protocol... please proceed...
GALE: John? Hey, you out there? What's that noise? John? What's going on? Talk to me.
LOCKE: Will you be quiet!
GALE: Tell me what's happening, what the hell is...
LOCKE: Will you shut up!!
LOUDSPEAKER VOICE: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5...
GALE: Maybe you should get Jack?
LOCKE: I said, shut up!!!
LOUDSPEAKER VOICE: 4, 3, 2, 1.
[The blast doors begin coming down. Locke manages to get a crow bar slipped in under the last door to go down just in the nick of time.]
GALE: What happened?
[Back in the hatch, the lights start flickering.]
GALE: Hey, what's going on?
[Locke tries to lift the blast door using the crow bar, but can barely get it to budge.]
GALE: Are you still out there? John? John?
LOCKE: I'm here.
GALE: What were those noises? What's wrong? Did something...
LOCKE: Nothing is wrong.
[Back at the hatch.]
LOCKE: We're locked in.
GALE: What?
LOCKE: These blast doors came down. The whole living area is sealed off. I can't get out.
GALE: Did you try to pry...
LOCKE: Yeah, but I couldn't -- maybe, maybe if the 2 of us.
GALE: You want me to help you?
LOCKE: Yeah.
GALE: And if I do help you get these doors up then you're just going to lock me back in here, aren't you?
LOCKE: That's right.
GALE: Then I'm going to need your word, John. I'm going to need your word that you won't let your people do anything to me.
LOCKE: Well, if you're who you say you are then what are you worried about?
GALE: Things have happened to them -- things that I have nothing to do with. But they've got no one to blame except for me. So I'm going to need your word that you'll protect me, no matter what.
[Locke opens the armory door.]
LOCKE: Who are you?
GALE: My name is Henry Gale. I'm from Minnesota. And I crashed on this island just like you.
LOCKE: Alright, you have my word.
[In the hatch, we see Locke positioning one of the longer bars for the weights to slide it under the blast door to get more leverage. Locke and Gale lift the door with the crow bar far enough to slide the weight bar under. They use the weight bar to try to lift the door higher.]
LOCKE: Let's go. Harder.
GALE: I'm losing it.
LOCKE: The tool box. Get the tool box -- that'll hold it.
GALE: You sure?
LOCKE: Get it! Come on, put it under.
[The tool box holds the door. Locke immediately starts to slide under.]
GALE: John, John, wait, don't just...
[The tool box buckles and Locke's legs are trapped under the door. He screams out in pain, and Gale tries lifting the door with his arms.]
LOCKE: You have to stop the door. Put something else under the door. Come on, come on.
[Gale puts the weights under the door.]
LOCKE: Stack 'em, stack 'em. You have to stop the pressure. Come on, come on, come on.
[Gale puts enough weights so the door stops moving down.]
GALE: Alright, alright, let's get you out. Come on.
[Gale starts pulling Locke out.]
LOCKE: No, no, stop, stop, stop!
GALE: Alright, we'll wait 'til somebody comes down. Alright? It's only a matter of time, yeah?
LOCKE: Yeah, but we don't have time.
[Back in the hatch.]
GALE: What does it do?
LOCKE: We're not exactly sure.
GALE: And you push it...
LOCKE: Every 108 minutes, yeah.
GALE: How soon does this alarm go off?
LOCKE: Very -- which is why I need you to go up through the grate and into the vents.
GALE: Grate's bolted shut. I tried it.
LOCKE: There's another grate in the pantry. You can get up through there. Take the vent into the dome.
GALE: Maybe we should wait.
LOCKE: We can't wait; it's going to go off any minute. I trusted you, Henry, now you've got to trust me. That button has to be pushed.
GALE: Okay, what do I do?
LOCKE: Once you're inside, you'll hear the alarm beeping, and you just have to enter the numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, and then you press execute. It has to be exactly those numbers in exactly that order. Now do you...
GALE: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. I got it.
[Gale goes into the pantry.]
LOCKE: Can you reach it?
GALE: I think so.
[Gale climbs up on the shelving and tries to open the grate.]
LOCKE: Be careful.
[Gale falls and is unconscious.]
LOCKE: Henry?
[We hear the timer start to beep.]
LOCKE: Henry?!
[Back in the hatch we see that Henry is still unconscious and the alarm is still beeping.]
LOCKE: Henry, get up, damn it. Henry! [Henry comes to] Henry, are you alright?
GALE: What happened?
LOCKE: Listen to me, you have to get up into the vents and enter the numbers into the computer.
GALE: How long was I...
LOCKE: Please, you have to go right now; we're running out of time.
GALE [faintly]: Okay, yeah.
LOCKE: Be careful!
[Henry goes into the vent.]
LOCKE: Henry?! [The 1 minute alarm starts sounding] Henry, can you hear me?
[Locke tries very unsuccessfully to lift door with his arms.]
LOCKE: Henry? Henry?
[We see Locke in the hatch. The alarm is sounding furiously.]
LOCKE: Henry! Henry!!
[Suddenly the alarm stops and we hear the timer numbers flipping. We hear sounds like something powering up. The lights go out. We hear the numbers stop flipping.]
LOCKE: Please say something.
[We see black lights comes on, Locke looks at the blast door in surprise and we see a map of the hatches fluorescing in the black light. The lights go off again, and the regular lights come back on. The blast doors come up. We see that a bar on the bottom of the door has gone into Locke's leg. He pushes himself away from the door.]
LOCKE: Henry!
[Locke pulls himself by his arms into the computer room.]
LOCKE: Henry? Anybody here?
[We see the timer at 107.]
LOCKE: Is anybody here? Henry!
[We see Henry approach Locke from behind.]
LOCKE: You came back.
GALE: What, did you think I was going to leave you here? Come on, can you stand?
LOCKE: I don't -- I think so. [Locke stands and leans again a wall] Thank you, Henry. Thank you for not leaving me.
GALE: You're welcome, John.
[We see Gale helping Locke to the couch in the hatch.]
GALE: I've got you, easy, easy.
[Gale lifts Locke's leg up to the coffee table. Locke winces in pain.]
GALE: Sorry.
LOCKE: What did you do -- what did you do to end it -- to make the doors go up?
GALE: I did what you told me to. I punched in the code and pressed the execute button, but nothing happened other than that clock flipping back. I was climbing back into the vent when the lights went out. 10 seconds later the doors went up. I didn't do anything.
LOCKE: You think it was all just random?
GALE: Don't look at me; it's your hatch.
JACK [entering]: Get away from him.
GALE: Wait, you don't...
SAYID [aiming his gun]: Step back, right now.
LOCKE: Sayid, it's okay.
[Jack grabs Gale and shoves him up against a wall.]
JACK: I said, "get away"!
LOCKE: I let him out -- some kind of lockdown or something -- he, he was helping me.
GALE: Couldn't you find my balloon?
ANA: Yeah, we found it.
SAYID: We did find your balloon, Henry Gale, exactly how you described it. We also found the grave you described -- your wife's grave. The grave you said you dug with your own bare hands. It was all there. Your whole story -- your alibi -- it was true. But still I did not believe it to be true. So I dug up that grave and found that there was not a woman inside. There was a man. [Sayid shows him a driver's license] A man named Henry Gale.

2.16 The Whole Truth

[We see Ana and Gale in the armory.]
GALE: Were you on the plane, too?
ANA: I was in the tail section. We crashed on the other side of the island.
GALE: You walked across all the way here? That must have been fun.
ANA: It had its moments. So, are you going to tell me your story, Henry?
GALE: Why bother, I've already told it to everyone -- Jack, Locke, the big black guy that cut off his beard in front of me. Oh, yeah, and my buddy, Sayid. You can see how much he liked my story.
ANA: So how about you try me.
GALE: I don't mean to be ungrateful, but why are you going to help me get out of here?
ANA: On the other side of the island there was this guy with us. I was 100 percent convinced that he wasn't on the plane. So I dug a whole and I threw him in it.
GALE: And what happened?
ANA: I was wrong. And now he's dead. But good news for you Henry -- I don't make the same mistake twice. So how about you tell me your story?
[In the armory.]
ANA: So let me get this straight -- you and your wife travel around the world and crash here in a smiley-face balloon? Then she dies. You get captured by a French chick who brings you here, and then they lock you up.
GALE: It sounds kind of silly when you say it like that.
ANA: Why don't you have a beard?
GALE: Because I shaved -- because I needed something normal.
ANA: Okay, so why don't you draw me a map to your balloon? We'll go out there, we'll find it, and everybody will believe you.
GALE: That's what they all keep asking me to do -- draw a map. And if I mess up they'll crucify me.
ANA: You flew around the world in a balloon and you don't think you can draw up a good map?
GALE: Air travel -- it's a different animal. It's about wind currents and...
ANA: Do you or do you not know where it is?
GALE: Yeah, I know where it is. I went back there to bury my wife.
ANA: Why'd you do that?
GALE: Because our balloon was the closest thing we had to home. You people have been looking for someone to punish for everything that's happened to you -- someone to blame -- and now you've got him. It doesn't matter what I do, I'm dead already.
ANA: You draw up that map, Henry. I'll find your balloon. But if you don't, things are going to play out just like you said
[We see Gales reading in the armory. Jack enters.]
JACK: How is it?
GALE [reading from the book]: Men reject their prophets and slay them, but they love their martyrs and honor those whom they have slain. [to Jack] So what's the difference between a martyr and a prophet?
JACK: Either way, it sounds like you end up dead.
GALE: That's the spirit.
JACK: In the mood for some breakfast?
[We see Locke getting bowls and cereal. Jack leads Gale out of the armory. Locke looks surprised. Gale sees the computer room.]
GALE: What's the computer for?
JACK: Nothing.
GALE: Cereal? Wow, where'd you guys get cereal?
LOCKE: It was down here all along. The pantry's full of food.
GALE: How old is it? [Jack and Locke don't respond] You guys don't know much, huh? I mean, I'd be asking all kinds of questions about all this stuff down here. You guys don't even seem that curious.
JACK: Do you want the cereal or don't you?
GALE: This must be my reward for good behavior, huh? I guess I earned myself some good will for finally drawing that map for Ana.
LOCKE: What map?
GALE: To my balloon.
JACK [to Locke]: Did you...
LOCKE: No.
GALE: Wow, you guys have some real trust issues, don't you? Guess it makes sense she didn't tell you. I mean, with the two of you fighting all the time. Of course, if I was one of them -- these people that you seem to think are your enemies -- what would I do? Well, there'd be no balloon, so I'd draw a map to a real secluded place like a cave or some underbrush -- good place for a trap -- an ambush. And when your friends got there a bunch of my people would be waiting for them. Then they'd use them to trade for me. I guess it's a good thing I'm not one of them, huh? You guys got any milk?
